What is Geodon used for? 

Geodon (generic name: ziprasidone hydrochloride) is an oral medication indicated to treat patients with schizophrenia. It is also used as an acute treatment for manic or mixed episodes due to bipolar I disorder, and maintenance treatment for bipolar I disorder together with lithium or valproate. Adults are the only ones who can use this drug. 

This is available in Geodon 80 mg, 60 mg, 40 mg, and 20 mg capsule forms. 

How does Geodon work? 

This atypical antipsychotic, like other antipsychotics, binds to serotonin-2A and dopamine D2 receptors. However, Geodon has a higher 5-HT2A and D2-receptor affinity ratio. It improves modulation of the mood, relieves notable negative symptoms, enhances overall cognitive function, and also helps reduce motor dysfunction. 

How to use Geodon

You could be more prone to heat stroke while on this medication because it could make you sweat less. Avoid tasks or activities that could make you overheat, like exercising in hot weather or going on hot tubs. You should also dress lightly, drink a lot of fluids, and limit your time outdoors if the weather is hot. 

Among the adverse effects of this medicine are dizziness, drowsiness, and vision changes. Be cautious when doing activities that require alertness and clear vision, such as driving and using machinery. You should also avoid or limit alcohol because consumption of alcohol may aggravate or cause the said side effects. 

Pregnant moms must avoid this medication because of the possible harm that it could cause to unborn babies. On the other hand, it is still not known if this drug could pass into breast milk. Use this antipsychotic only if clearly needed.
