Dosage

The brand Betapace and its generic Sotalol are available in the strength of 80 mg and 160 mg tablets.

Usage

Betapace (Sotalol) is a prescription medication used to treat atrial fibrillation and other conditions that cause an irregular heartbeat, including sustained ventricular tachycardia. The active ingredient in Betapace is Sotalol. Sotalol belongs to the class of medication called antidysrhythmic, II; non-selective beta-blockers. It works by slowing down the heart rate and makes it easier for the heart to pump blood around the body.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Betapace are feeling dizzy, feeling sick, feeling tired, diarrhoea, and headache.

Stop using Betapace and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Changes in your breathing pattern, such as shortness of breath or difficulty with breathing;
• No significant improvement despite regular use;
• Severe diarrhea;
• Severe palpitation;
• Serious chest pain;
• A sudden and rapid drop in your heartbeat

Warnings and Interactions

Betapace is a tablet and should be taken orally with a cup of water. You should use your medication according to your prescription label. Do not increase your dose at any point, as this may cause a rapid drop in your blood pressure, which may be fatal. You may feel the effect of Sotalol medication about 4 hours after oral intake, but it can take 2 to 3 days to take effect fully. Your doctor may direct you to take the Betapace tablet once or twice daily (morning and evening), depending on the severity of your condition. You should never take two tablets at the same time. Never take an extra dose to make up for a forgotten one. Sotalol may make you feel dizzy. You should not drive or operate a heavy machine until you are sure you can do so. Avoid alcoholic beverages when taking Sotalol, as this may worsen your condition. You should inform your doctor of all the medication you are using if you are treating hypertension or any other heart disease co-existing with abnormal heart rhythm. Inform your doctor if there are no changes in your condition for alternative medicine. Do not stop taking Sotalol tablet without informing your doctor.

Before you start using Betapace or its generic Sotalol, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have the following:
• A lung disease such as severe asthma;
• Heart failure;
• Hyperthyroidism;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Low pressure (hypotensive)

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. It may harm an unborn baby. We always encourage our customers to have an open conversation with their doctors about the risks and benefits of their medications. Sotalol passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a breastfeeding baby. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Betapace and other drugs such as amitriptyline, chlorpromazine, desipramine, droperidol, clonidine, erythromycin, lumefantrine, quinidine, and ziprasidone.
