What is Actonel used for? 

This medication treats or prevents certain types of bone loss, such as osteoporosis in adult patients. Osteoporosis will cause bones to become thinner or break easily. The chance of developing Osteoporosis will increase as you age.   

Actonel works by slowing down bone loss to help maintain strong bones that greatly reduce the risk of broken bones. This medication belongs to a drug class called bisphosphonates.

How to take Actonel 

Actonel 35 mg is typically taken orally as your doctor directed; this medication is taken once weekly. You should take this medication when you wake up in the morning or before having breakfast. Do not take Actonel at bedtime or while you are in bed. This medication should only be taken with water and no other beverages. Do not suck or chew on the tablets. Actonel should be swallowed whole. Do not lie down for at least 30 mins after taking this medication, remain standing or sitting.   

Actonel dosage will depend on your treatment response and your medical history. Take Actonel regularly for it to have the most benefit on you. To remember to take the medication, take it at the same time every week.

Cautions while on Actonel 

Before you use Actonel, tell your doctor or healthcare provider if you are allergic to this medication or other similar drugs such as etidronate, alendronate, and pamidronate. Or if you have other allergies not related to this medication.  

Before using Actonel, various medical histories must be told by your doctor. These medical histories include difficult or painful swallowing, esophagus problems such as achalasia esophageal stricture, stomach or intestinal disorders such as ulcers, low blood calcium levels such as hypocalcemia, inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 mins, and severe kidney disease. Before surgery, prescription or non-prescription medication and herbal products should be told to your doctor.   

Caution is advised if you are planning to be pregnant or already pregnant. This drug will stay in your system for many years. However, the effects on the unborn baby are not known yet. Discuss the details with your doctor or healthcare provider.

Actonel Side effects

Serious side effects 

New or unusual hip, thigh, or groin pain, eye and vision pain, increased or severe bone, joint, and muscle pain, chest pain, new or severe worsening heartburn, severe stomach, and abdominal pain, difficult or painful swallowing, vomit that looks like coffee grounds and black or tarry stools. If you experience any of these effects, contact your doctor immediately.
