What is Flagyl used for?

Flagyl (generic name: metronidazole) is an oral medication indicated to treat different types of infection. It is prescribed for symptomatic and asymptomatic trichomoniasis, amoebiasis, anaerobic bacterial infections, intra-abdominal infections, skin infections, gynecologic infections, bacterial septicemia, bone and joint infections, central nervous system (CNS) infections, lower respiratory tract infections, and endocarditis. To avoid developing drug-resistant bacteria, this medication is only prescribed to prevent and treat infections that are proven to be caused by susceptible bacteria.

This is available in Flagyl 500 mg, 400 mg, 250 mg, and 200 mg tablets.

How does Flagyl work?

This nitroimidazole works by causing cell death in susceptible organisms. Note that taking antibiotics with evenly spaced intervals is important. Do not change your dose or duration of treatment because it is determined by your medical condition and response to therapy. Further, do not stop taking this medication abruptly to avoid the return of the infection.
