Usage

Grastek (Standardized Timothy Grass Pollen Extract) is an allergen extract used to treat grass pollen-induced allergic rhinitis with or without conjunctivitis, such as itching and watery eyes. The active substance in Grastek is a natural grass pollen extract which is Timothy grass allergenic extract. Grastek belongs to the class of medications called allergy immunotherapies. This medication works by causing the body’s immune system to become less sensitive to the effects of the pollen.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Grastek are itching of the ear or mouth, mouth pain, swelling of the mouth, lips, and tongue, numbness and tingling in the mouth, sore throat, hives, shortness of breath, indigestion, nausea. Place the tablet under the tongue and allow it to dissolve for at least 1 minute before swallowing. Do not chew or swallow the pill.

Stop using Grastek and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Ear pruritus;
• Fast heart rate;
• Mouth pruritus;
• Severe dizziness;
• Severe itching of the mouth;
• Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat;
• Tongue itching;
• Throat irritation

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Grastek if you are allergic to Standardized Timothy Grass Pollen Extract or any of the ingredients in this medicine. Grastek can cause systemic allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis which may be life-threatening. It can also cause severe local reactions, including laryngopharyngeal swelling, which can compromise breathing. Kindly reach out to your doctor if you have any of these symptoms.

Before you start using Grastek, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:

• A history of eosinophilic esophagitis;
• Certain medication such as antidepressant or migraine medicine;
• Certain underlying medical conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure;
• History of unresponsive to epinephrine or inhaled bronchodilators;
• History of any severe systemic allergic reaction or any severe local reaction to sublingual allergen immunotherapy;
• Hypersensitivity to any of the inactive ingredients contained in Grastek;
• Severe, unstable, or uncontrollable asthma

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Grastek should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether timothy grass pollen allergen extract passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby. Grastek should not be given to a child younger than five years old, and it is not for use in people older than 65. There may be a drug interaction between Grastek and other drugs such as tocilizumab, brentuximab, tadalafil, doxorubicin, fluticasone/salmeterol, fluconazole, hydrochlorothiazide/valsartan, levofloxacin, albuterol, etc.
