Indications

Vfend is an antifungal medicine used to treat infections caused by yeast and certain types of fungus including aspergillosis, esophageal candidiasis, scedosporium, fusarium, and candidemia.

Voriconazole is an antifungal drug that inhibits an aspect of the biosynthesis of fungal ergosterol. By reducing ergosterol in fungal cells, Vfend helps treat and improve your fungal infections. The drug is active against many fungus forms allowing it to treat many types of infections.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Vfend that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual and severity of their fungal infection being treated. Follow all your healthcare provider’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully to ensure the best results. Do not change your dose or suddenly stop taking this medication without consulting your healthcare provider.

  • Swallow tablets whole
  • Take one hour before or after a meal
  • Continue treatment for the full length of time prescribed, even if you feel well
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

To treat aspergillosis and serious fusarium and scedosporium infections in adults:

  • Adults should start treatment with a loading dose of 400mg twice for the first day
  • The following day, adults should start taking maintenance doses
  • Most maintenance doses are 200mg twice daily, taken 12 hours apart

To treat pediatric fungal infections:

  • Children aged 2 to 12 weighing less than 50kg should take a loading dose of 9mg/kg every 12 hours on the first day of treatment
  • Starting the second day, children under 50kg should take 9mg/kg up to 350mg every 12 hours
  • Children weighing 50kg or more and those 15 or older should take a loading dose of 400mg every 12 hours followed by 200mg every 12 hours each day thereafter

  • Many drugs could interact with Vfend and cause adverse reactions. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicines, but especially any of the following:
    • Carbamazepine
    • Cisapride
    • Efavirenz
    • Ivabradine
    • Lurasidone
    • Naloxegol
    • Pimozide
    • Quinidine
    • Rifabutin, rifampin
    • Ritonavir
    • Sirolimus
    • St. John’s wort
    • Tolvaptan
    • Venetoclax
    • Some barbiturates such as mephobarbital or phenobarbital
    • Ergot migraine medications like ergotamine or ergonovine
