Azilect (Rasagiline) Medication Information
Uses
Azilect is prescribed to treat Parkinson’s disease. It can be used on its own or in combination with other medications.
Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder that gradually worsens over time. In Parkinson’s disease, the nerve cells of the brain become damaged and release less dopamine. Dopamine is a signal molecule in the brain that helps to produce movement. Without dopamine, a person experiences symptoms that impair movement.
Parkinson’s disease symptoms may include tremor, slowed movement (bradykinesia), stiffness, loss of balance, and rigid muscles. It becomes challenging to perform normal movements like standing, writing, and speaking.
Dosage
Azilect is formulated in 0.5 mg and 1 mg tablets.
When used with the anti-Parkinson’s drug levodopa, the dose is 0.5 mg by mouth once daily.
When taken by itself or in addition to an anti-Parkinson’s medication besides levodopa, the dose is 1 mg by mouth once daily.

Precautions
Azilect can cause behavioral symptoms, including problems with impulse control, hallucinations, and psychotic-like behavior.
Azilect is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), which is a type of medication with many drug-drug interactions. MAOIs cannot be taken if you are using the following drugs:
- Cyclobenzaprine
- Methadone
- Meperidine
- Propoxyphene
- St. John’s wort
- Propoxyphene
- Tramadol
Azilect can cause hypertension (high blood pressure) and hypotension (low blood pressure).
Azilect can cause a serious side effect called serotonin syndrome when used with antidepressants.

- Avoid foods that contain tyramine because they can cause large increases in blood pressure. Examples include aged cheese, beer on tap, fermented meats, red wine, sauerkraut, soy sauce, and miso soup.
- Use caution if you are driving or operating heavy machinery while taking Azilect because it can be sedating.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist before you start any new medications, including over-the-counter drugs, herbals, or supplements.
