Usage

Dilantin contains the active ingredient phenytoin, which belongs to the group of drugs called anticonvulsants. It is used in the treatment of patients suffering from epilepsy. Phenytoin prevents seizures in epileptic patients by preventing excessive electrical activity in the brain. It is believed to work by preventing sodium from entering nerve cells when they begin to fire rapid and repetitive electrical signals. Because phenytoin works to stabilize electrical nerve activity, it is also prescribed to treat trigeminal neuralgia, in which the facial nerves spontaneously send messages of pain to the brain.
