Compazine Details (Brand and Generic)

Dosage

The brand Compazine is available in the strength of 3 mg and 5 mg tablets and 5 mg/5 ml/100 ml syrup. The generic Prochlorperazine comes in the strength of 5 mg and 10 mg tablets and 10 mg suppositories.

Usage

Compazine (Prochlorperazine) belongs to a group of medicines called phenothiazine tranquillisers. They may be used to treat dizziness due to ear diseases (such as Meniere’s syndrome or labyrinthitis), or due to other causes. This medicine is also used to treat nausea and vomiting including during a migraine; mental illnesses (such as schizophrenia and mania) and anxiety in the short term. Prochlorperazine is an antipsychotic medication which affects chemicals in the brain that allow communications between nerve cells (neurotransmitters). These chemicals are called dopamine and serotonin and it seems to readjust the balance of dopamine and Serotonin. Take this medicine by mouth. Do not give to children under 1 year of age or who weigh less than 10kg. Do not let the tablets touch your skin for very long, as you may get skin redness, swelling and itching (contact skin sensitisation).

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Compazine are headache, dizziness, drowsiness; dry mouth, stuffy nose; nausea, constipation; increased appetite, weight gain; blurred vision; agitation, feeling jittery, trouble sleeping; skin redness, itching, or rash; missed menstrual periods; or impotence, abnormal ejaculation; abnormal production of breast milk in men and women; breast enlargement in men; loss of menstrual periods; difficulty sleeping (insomnia).

Stop using Compazine and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Breathing problems;
• Changes in your skin or eye colour;
• Feeling dizzy, lightheaded or faint when you stand or sit up quickly (due to low blood pressure);
• Feeling tired, weak, confused and have muscles that ache, are stiff or do not work well which may be due to low sodium levels in your blood (hyponatremia);
• Feeling unwell, confused and/or weak, feeling sick (nausea), loss of appetite, feeling irritable;
• Passing large amounts of urine, excessive thirst and having a dry mouth or skin. This could be due to too much sugar in your blood (hyperglycaemia);
• Problems with your eyesight;
• You have fits (convulsions)

Warnings and Interactions

Do not take Prochlorperazine tablets if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to prochlorperazine maleate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Before you start using Compazine, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are allergic to phenothiazine medicines such as chlorpromazine;
• Are elderly (65 years of age or older);
• Are going to give it to a child;
• Are diabetic or have high levels of sugar in your blood (hyperglycaemia);
• Have heart problems or a family history of heart problems;
• Have liver or kidney problems;
• Have thyroid problems;
• Have an enlarged prostate gland;
• Have a history of blood clots;
• Have Parkinson’s disease;
• Have dementia;
• Have epilepsy or have ever had fits (seizures);
• Have depression;
• Have a tumor on your adrenal gland called ‘phaeochromocytoma’;
• Have a type of muscle weakness called ‘myasthenia gravis’;
• Have or have ever had glaucoma (signs include painful eyes with blurred vision);
• Have or have ever had a low number of white blood cells (agranulocytosis);
• Have low blood levels of potassium, calcium and magnesium;
• Have a history of alcohol problems

Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Prochlorperazine Tablets because alcohol can add to the effects of Prochlorperazine Tablets and can cause serious breathing difficulties. Do not take Prochlorperazine Tablets if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby or if you are breast-feeding or planning to breast-feed. You may feel sleepy after taking this medicine. If this happens, do not drive or use any tools or machines. Prochlorperazine tablets contain lactose. If you have been told you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. This is because Prochlorperazine Tablets can affect the way some other medicines work. Also some medicines can affect the way Prochlorperazine Tablets work. In particular, tell your doctor if you are taking medicines to help you sleep (sedatives, barbiturates); other medicines used to calm emotional and mental conditions; medicines used for depression, including amitriptyline; medicines used for Parkinson’s disease such as levodopa; medicines for fits (epilepsy) such as carbamazepine; medicines used to control your heartbeat such as amiodarone or quinidine; medicines for high blood pressure such as doxazosin or clonidine; medicines used for diabetes; medicines used for cancer (cytotoxics); medicines used for infections (antibiotics); medicines for indigestion and heartburn (antacids); anticholinergic medicines – includes some medicines used for irritable bowel syndrome, asthma or incontinence; amphetamines – used for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD); adrenaline – used for life threatening allergic reactions; desferrioxamine – used when you have too much iron in your blood; lithium – used for some types of mental illness.
