Table of contents:

Linessa is a prescription medication used for the prevention of pregnancy. It contains two female sex hormones, an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and a progestin (desogestrel) and works by preventing ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary) and by changing the cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus to prevent the fertilization of an egg or implantation of a fertilized egg.

Note that Linessa does not protect against sexually transmitted infections and should be used in combination with condoms or other forms of protection.

Use and Dosage

Linessa comes in the form of 21- and 28-days tablet to take orally once a day at the same time each day. In case of 21-day pack: Take one tablet daily for 21 days, then do not take any tablets for 7 days, and then begin the next pack. For 28-day pack: Take one tablet daily for 21 days, then take one "reminder" tablet daily for 7 days, and then begin the next pack.

Talk with your doctor about the best time to start your tablets. The first day of your menstrual period (bleeding) is known as "Day 1." Your doctor may have you start your tablets on the first Sunday after your period starts or on Day 1 of your period. The tablets should be taken approximately the same time every day.

The Linessa tablet should be taken in the order specified on the package and should not be skipped or missed. If you miss a dose, you should take the missed dose as soon as possible, and continue with your regular schedule. Talk to your doctor about any other medications you are taking, as they may interact with Linessa.
