WHAT IS ARAVA?

Arava (Leflunomide) is a prescription medication that helps with the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a medical condition where the immune system fails to recognize the body. This leads to the immune system attacking your own body’s tissues, commonly in the joints of the hands, wrists, and knees.

It belongs to a class of drugs called antirheumatics or selective immunosuppressants, which suppress the immune system from being overactive. This leads to reducing inflammation in the body caused by rheumatoid arthritis.

ARAVA PRECAUTIONS

Before taking Arava, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to the ingredients of this medication or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you or a member of your family has suffered or is suffering from the following medical conditions:

  • Cancer
  • Alcohol Abuse
  • Heart Disease
  • Kidney Disease
  • Liver Disease
  • Lung Disease
  • Tuberculosis
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Current or Recent Infection
  • Immune System Disorder
  • Bone Marrow/Blood Disorder

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness, as this medication causes you to experience drowsiness, dizziness, or blurry vision. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. Avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) intake to avoid worsening these side effects.

Consult your healthcare provider first before having immunizations or vaccinations, and avoid contact with people who have recently had their oral polio vaccine or inhaled flu vaccine. This medication puts you at an increased risk of catching infections. Avoid contact with people who have contagious infections, and consult your doctor if you ever be in contact with one.

Arava is not recommended to be taken during pregnancy, as it poses harm to an unborn baby. Women of childbearing age are required to take a pregnancy test. It must result in negative before taking this medication. Both men and women are advised to consult their doctor for reliable forms of birth control (pills, condom, IUD) while taking this medication.

It is unknown whether this medication affects the sperm of a man taking this medication. For patients who wish to father a child, the manufacturer suggests stopping this medication and considering using another drug to help replace this medication in the body before attempting to father a child.

This medication passes into breast milk and poses harm to a nursing infant. Consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding or want to breastfeed, as breastfeeding is not recommended while taking this medication.

ARAVA DOSAGE

Be sure to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding the prescribed dose for your condition. Read the medication guide and prescription labels for the drug information and directions in taking this medication. Ask for help from a doctor or pharmacist if you don’t understand the instructions.

This medication comes in three dosage forms and strengths: Arava 10 mg and Arava 20 mg tablets.

For the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, the recommended dose is 100 mg, taken orally once daily. After three days, the dose will be minimized to 10 – 20 mg, taken orally once daily.

In case you missed a dose of this medication, take the medication tablet as soon as you remember. However, if your next planned dose for your condition is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the following one. Don’t take a double dose of this medication to make up for the missed dosage.

In case you are experiencing fainting or trouble breathing, which are possible symptoms of an overdose, call the local emergency hotline and seek medical attention immediately.

Store this medication at room temperature in a clean, dry place.

ARAVA FAQs

What is Arava used for?

There is only one medical condition that can be treated by Arava: rheumatoid arthritis. This medication helps reduce the inflammation caused by this medical condition.

Does Arava cause weight loss?

According to patient reviews and clinical studies for Arava, weight loss has been a significant side effect within 3 months of the administration. This side effect reportedly has not been observed in other therapies for treating rheumatoid arthritis.

Arava vs Methotrexate: Which is better?

Both medications, Arava and Methotrexate, reduce inflammation. However, Methotrexate is also used for cell replication. Arava is used for rheumatoid arthritis, while Methotrexate is for cancer, juvenile arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, and lupus. Arava only comes as a tablet, while Methotrexate comes as a tablet, an injection, or an infusion.

Both medications can cause serious birth defects and both are recommended to be stopped if a patient is planning to get pregnant or father a child.
