Senokot Information

Senokot (Sennosides) is used to treat occasional constipation. The drug is also used to clean out the intestines before a bowel examination or surgery. Constipation can lead to serious complications like anal fissures, fecal impaction, and hemorrhoids if left untreated. Stimulant laxatives like Sennosides keep water in the intestine to stimulate bowel movement and reduce constipation.

Senokot Side Effects

The most common side effects of Senokot may include gas; abdominal pain; mild nausea; diarrhea; Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Low potassium levels, such as irregular heartbeat, increased thirst, muscle weakness;

Senokot Precautions

Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Senokot and other medications, like albuterol; furosemide; warfarin; digoxin; birth control pills; prednisone;. Avoid taking Senokot within two hours of taking other medications. Do not use Senokot if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. It is not known if this medication will harm your unborn baby. The drug should only be used in pregnancy in lower doses if the benefits outweigh the risks. Do not use Senokot while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. Sennosides passes into your breastmilk in trace amounts but it should not harm nursing infants. It is not known if this drug is safe for use in children below 2 years of age. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take this drug by mouth with a full glass of water. It is best to take this medicine at bedtime. Senokot should cause a bowel movement within 6 to 12 hours. Do not take this drug for more than 7 days in a row. If your constipation worsens or does not improve, contact your doctor immediately. Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of the reach of children.
