Evamist (Estradiol)

Indications

Evamist is a transdermal spray medication that contains estradiol, an estrogen hormone. It is used to replace estrogen hormones that the body loses during menopause to relieve moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes. It is a once-daily spray that delivers estrogen directly through the skin (transdermally). Evamist works by reducing symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and vaginal dryness.

Evamist can be used by women to help reduce certain symptoms of menopause (hot flashes). Symptoms of menopause are caused by the body making less estrogen. Estradiol is an estrogen replacement. It replaces estrogen hormones that your body loses during menopause. Replacing estrogen helps relieve symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats.

Uses and Dosage

Evamist is a transdermal spray that is applied to the skin of the arm once daily. The recommended dosage is one or two sprays per day, depending on individual needs and treatment goals. To use Evamist spray, keep the spray upright during use.

Apply the spray to clean, dry skin on the inside area of your forearm between the elbow and the wrist in the morning as directed by your healthcare provider. If your dose requires more than one spray, do not apply more than one spray on the same area of the skin. Apply additional sprays of Evamist spray to sites next to each other, but not overlapping. Do not apply Evamist spray to broken or irritated skin, and do not apply it to other areas of the body, such as the breast, face, or vaginal area, unless specifically directed to do so by your healthcare provider.

To use the Evamist spray pump, follow these steps:

1. Read and carefully follow the instructions provided with the medication.
2. Prime the pump before first use by holding the spray upright and pumping three times.
3. Apply the Evamist spray to clean, dry, and unbroken skin on the inside of your forearm, between the elbow and wrist.
4. Hold the spray about 1 to 2 inches away from the skin and press down firmly on the pump to release one or two sprays, depending on your dosage.
5. Rub the spray into the skin with your fingers and allow it to dry completely before covering the area with clothing.

Caution

• Using estrogen alone may increase your chance of getting cancer of the uterus (womb). Report any unusual vaginal bleeding right away while you are using EVAMIST. Vaginal bleeding after menopause may be a warning sign of cancer of the womb. Your healthcare provider should check any unusual vaginal bleeding to find the cause.
• Before you use EVAMIST, tell your healthcare provider if you have any unusual vaginal bleeding, have any other medical conditions; are going to have surgery or will be on bed rest; are breast feeding.
• Do not start using EVAMIST if you have unusual vaginal bleeding; currently have or have had certain cancers; had a stroke or heart attack; currently have or have had blood clots; currently have or have had liver problems; have been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder; are allergic to EVAMIST or any of its ingredients; or think you may be pregnant.
• Do not use estrogen alone or with progestins to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, or dementia (decline in brain function).
• EVAMIST contains alcohol, which is flammable. Avoid fire, flame, or smoking until the area of your skin where you have applied EVAMIST has dried.
• The estrogen in EVAMIST spray can transfer from the area of skin where it was sprayed to other people. Do not allow others, especially children, to come into contact with the area of your skin where you sprayed EVAMIST. Young children who are accidentally exposed to estrogen through contact with women using EVAMIST may show signs of puberty that are not expected (for example, breast budding).
• Using estrogen-alone or with progestins may increase your chances of getting strokes, blood clots, or dementia.
• Using estrogens with progestins may increase your chances of getting heart attacks or breast cancer.
• You and your healthcare provider should talk regularly about whether you still need treatment with EVAMIST.
