Description

Generic Name: febuxostat

Drug Class xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor

Uloric Indications

Uloric is an oral prescription drug used to manage hyperuricemia among patients with gout. This is only used for symptomatic high blood uric acid levels. It is not prescribed to treat asymptomatic hyperuricemia.

Dosage Forms

This is available in Uloric 80 mg and Uloric 40 mg tablets.

Uloric Mechanism of Action

This oral medication hinders the xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) by blocking both oxidase and dehydrogenase activities. As a result, it can reduce the uric acid made by the body, therefore decreasing serum uric acid levels.

How to Take Uloric

Before taking this medication, it is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. You must not take any medication unless you have understood the uses and directions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further medical advice or additional details.

The only way to take this tablet is by mouth. This is usually prescribed once a day, and you may take it with or without a meal. Make a dosing schedule. Do not increase or decrease your Uloric doses. You should not also take this oral drug more frequently than advised.

You may still experience gout attacks for the first few weeks or months of taking this medication. You may be prescribed other medications, such as NSAIDs and colchicine, to help prevent or control gout symptoms.

Uloric Side Effects

Mild & Common Side Effects:

-Nausea

-Dizziness

-Joint pain

Severe Side Effects:

-Symptoms of liver disease

-Painful urination or blood in the urine

-Cardiovascular events

-Weakness

-Numbness of the extremities

Note that this is not a full/complete list of the side effects of Uloric.

If you experience severe or persistent adverse reactions, discontinue medication and call your doctor or any health care professional.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not take this prescription drug if you have a known allergy to febuxostat or any inactive ingredients it may contain. Always be watchful for any signs of serious allergic reactions, including trouble breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. If this occurs, stop taking this oral medication and seek emergency medical help immediately.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with cancer, heart attack, chest pain, stroke, kidney disease, liver disease, and organ transplant. Also, due to possible drug interactions, you should discuss all the prescription medications, nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

Because this oral medication can increase cardiovascular risk and the risk of stroke, this drug should be used only if treatment with allopurinol is proven ineffective. You should also report to your healthcare provider right away if you experience chest pain, weakness, fatigue, sudden numbness, and confusion.

Pregnant and breastfeeding moms must take this oral drug only if extremely necessary. It is necessary to discuss all the possible risks with a healthcare provider.
