Dosage

The brand Ziagen and its generic Abacavir are available in the strength of 300 mg tablets only.

Usage

Ziagen (Abacavir) is a prescription medicine used to treat and prevent the replication and worsening of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in adults, adolescents, and children. Ziagen lowers the chance of having HIV complications, including the new onset of diseases and cancer, and it improves the quality of life of affected patients. The active ingredient in Ziagen is Abacavir. Abacavir belongs to the class of medication called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors-NRTI. Guanosine analog inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by competing with dGTP as substrate, inhibiting viral replication. As a result, Abacavir reduces the amount of HIV in the blood.

Ziagen Side Effects

The common side effects of Ziagen are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, trouble with sleep, anorexia, headache, and muscle spasms.

Stop using Ziagen and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Depression or low mood;
• Mouth ulcer or thrush;
• Recurrent skin infections;
• Rapid weight loss;
• Symptoms of liver problems such as nausea, vomiting that doesn't stop, severe abdominal pain, yellowing eyes, and passage of dark urine;
• Unusual body weakness;
• Worsening of your symptoms

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Abacavir, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Ziagen is a tablet and should be taken orally with a cup of water, usually once or twice daily, with or without food. Follow your doctor's prescription label carefully and use your medication as directed by your doctor. To decrease your risk of spreading HIV disease to others, continue to take all HIV medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Use an effective barrier method (latex or polyurethane condoms/dental dams) during sexual activity as directed by your doctor. Do not share personal items (such as needles/syringes, toothbrushes, and razors) that may come into contact with blood or other body fluids. You should use your medication regularly. Skipping or changing your dose without your doctor's consent may cause the amount of virus to increase, make the infection more difficult to treat (resistant), or worsen side effects. Do not stop at any time without contacting your doctor, and do not miss your clinic appointment while taking Ziagen tablets.

Before you start using Ziagen, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Chronic alcoholics;
• Heart diseases;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including chronic hepatitis B and cirrhosis)

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, and use your drugs as prescribed to control your infection. HIV can be passed to your baby if the virus is not controlled during pregnancy. Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby. If your baby is born without HIV, the virus may be passed to the baby in your breast milk. You should discuss the available feeding practices for your child with your doctor. There may be a drug interaction between Ziagen and other drugs such as methadone, riociguat, and elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir DF. Store abacavir solution or tablets at room temperature, away from light and moisture.
