Indications

Remeron SolTab is an antidepressant medication that contains the active ingredient mirtazapine; it is used to treat major depressive disorder in adults.

Remeron SolTab works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain that affect mood and feelings of well-being.

Use and Dosage

Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start using mirtazapine and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily at bedtime. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

With clean and dry hands, open the blister pack and place the tablet on your tongue. The tablet will quickly dissolve and can be swallowed with your saliva. Taking this medication with water or liquid is not needed.

Do not break, chew, or crush the tablets. Do not remove any tablets from the blister pack until you are ready to take your dose. Doing so could make it work less well.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. It may take 1 to 4 weeks to notice improvement in your symptoms. Do not increase your dose or take it more often than prescribed.

Keep taking this medication even if you feel well. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when you suddenly stop this drug. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased. Tell your doctor if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse.

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, joint pain, fever, difficulty breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling).

Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

Serious side effects include:

  • Racing thoughts, decreased need for sleep, unusual risk-taking behavior, feelings of extreme happiness or sadness, or being more talkative than usual
  • Blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights
  • A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
  • Severe rash, blisters, or swelling on the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet
  • A seizure
  • Low white blood cell counts–fever, chills, sore throat, cough, sores in your mouth or nose, flu-like symptoms, or trouble breathing
  • Low sodium level –headache, confusion, slurred speech, severe weakness, vomiting, loss of coordination, or feeling unsteady

Seek medical attention right away if you have symptoms of serotonin syndrome, such as agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness, twitching, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Common side effects include:

  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Increased appetite
  • Weight gain

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur.

Cautions

  • Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially: a history or family history of psychiatric disorders (such as bipolar/manic-depressive disorder), history or family history of suicide attempts, liver disease, kidney disease, seizures, high blood cholesterol or triglyceride levels, heart disease (such as recent heart attack, angina), stroke, severe loss of body fluids (dehydration), low blood pressure, personal or family history of glaucoma (angle-closure type).
  • Mirtazapine may cause a condition that affects the heart rhythm (QT prolongation). QT prolongation can rarely cause serious (rarely fatal) fast/irregular heartbeat and other symptoms (such as severe dizziness, and fainting) that need medical attention right away.
  • The risk of QT prolongation may be increased if you have certain medical conditions or are taking other drugs that may cause QT prolongation. Before using mirtazapine, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the drugs you take and if you have any of the following conditions: certain heart problems (heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in the EKG), family history of certain heart problems (QT prolongation in the EKG, sudden cardiac death).
  • Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may also increase your risk of QT prolongation. This risk may increase if you use certain drugs (such as diuretics/”water pills”) or if you have conditions such as severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. Talk to your doctor about using mirtazapine safely.
  • This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).
  • To minimize dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a seated or lying position.
  • This medicine may contain aspartame. If you have phenylketonuria (PKU) or any other condition where you must restrict your intake of aspartame (or phenylalanine), consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding the safe use of this medicine.
  • Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially drowsiness and QT prolongation (see above).
  • During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. If this medication is used during the last 3 months of pregnancy, your newborn may develop symptoms including feeding or breathing difficulties, seizures, muscle stiffness, jitteriness, or constant crying. Report any such symptoms to your doctor promptly. However, since untreated mental/mood disorders (such as depression) can be a serious condition, do not stop taking this medication unless your doctor directs you to do so. If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, discuss with your doctor right away the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy.
  • This drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
