Usage

Myleran (Busulfan) is a prescription oral anticancer medication used to improve the quality of life and relieve cancer symptoms for people with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). It is also used before bone marrow transplant as a conditioning regimen. The active ingredient in the Myleran tablet is Busulfan. Busulfan belongs to the class of medication called an alkylating agent ("antineoplastic" or "cytotoxic"). It works by damaging the cancer cell's genetic material (DNA), leading to cell death.

The common side effects of Myleran are nausea, vomiting, breast swelling, stomach pain, hair loss, dry skin, darkened skin color, diarrhea, and sleep problem

Stop using Myleran and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Chest pain, recurrent cough, and shortness of breath;
• High-grade fever;
• Painful urination;
• Reddish urine;
• Severe bacterial, viral (e.g, cytomegalovirus viremia), fungal infections, and sepsis;
• Severe vomiting;
• Seizures;
• Stomach pain;
• Tooth hypoplasia

Warnings and Interactions

Myleran comes as a tablet and should be taken by mouth once daily. The amount of Busulfan tablet you will receive and how it is given depends on many factors, such as your height and weight, your general health, and the type of cancer or condition being treated. Your doctor will determine your dose and schedule, and you should take Busulfan as directed. Do not take more or less of it or more often than your doctor prescribes it. Myleran may lower your blood counts and worsen the side effects. You should call your doctor immediately if you are experiencing fever, sore throat, ongoing cough and congestion, or other signs of infection, unusual bleeding, or bruising. It would be best to be regular with all your clinic appointments with your doctor as your doctor may need to monitor your blood counts via the laboratory test and treat you accordingly. Men and women should be on an effective contraceptive while taking anticancer medication. You should discuss the risk of taking Busulfan with your doctor. Talk to your doctor about how you are feeling during your treatment. Do not stop taking Busulfan without talking to your doctor.

Before you start using Myleran, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection) ;
• Lung diseases or cancer;
• Other cancers apart from chronic myeloid leukemia;
• Seizure

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding your child. Busulfan (Myleran) should not be used by pregnant women or who may become pregnant. It is teratogenic and can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. It would be best to counsel women of reproductive age to use effective contraception during treatment and for six months following cessation of Busulfan therapy. Myleran passes into breast milk. There may be a drug interaction between Myleran and other drugs, such as itraconazole, cisplatin, carboplatin, acetaminophen, Streptozocin, and vaccine injections.
