Indications

Trilafon is an antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. This medication is also used to control severe nausea and vomiting.

Perphenazine is a phenothiazine antipsychotic that offers antiemetic and weak sedative properties. The drug balances chemicals in your brain such as dopamine to help you think more clearly and reduce nervousness, aggression, and hallucination. All these actions allow Trilafon to treat symptoms of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Trilafon that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual and type of mental disorder being treated. Follow all your healthcare provider’s directions and read packaging labels carefully for the best therapeutic results. Do not change your dose on your own or suddenly stop taking this medication.

  • Swallow tablets whole
  • Take with or without food
  • Use lowest effective dose to manage symptoms
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

To treat psychotic disorders:

  • Most adults start by taking 4 to 8mg three times a day
  • Adults should not take more than 24mg a day
  • After initial management of symptoms, reduce dose to the lowest effective amount
  • Trilafon may take up to 4 or 6 weeks to provide its full benefit; continue taking this medication as prescribed
  • Contact your healthcare provider if your symptoms worsen or do not improve after 6 weeks

To control nausea and vomiting:

  • Most adults take 8 to 16mg divided daily
  • Doses of 24mg may be needed but reduce as soon as possible
  • Children should take 8mg daily in divided doses
