Table of contents:

Pentasa is a medication used to treat certain bowel diseases, specifically mild to moderate ulcerative colitis in adults. It contains mesalamine, which is an anti-inflammatory agent that helps to reduce symptoms such as diarrhea and inflammation, ulcers, and sores in the bowel.

To alleviate the main symptom of ulcerative colitis, inflammation of the colon, this aminosalicylate obstructs the activity of both cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase; this, in turn, reduces the production of prostaglandin, the compound responsible for colon inflammation. It may be used alone or in combination with other medications, and treatment may vary depending on the severity of the condition and other individual factors.

Uses and Dosage

Pentasa comes in the form of Prolonged Release Tablet to take by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually 4 times daily.  Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break it as this can prevent the drug from being released properly into the colon. In case of difficulty swallowing the Tablets, the contents can be opened and sprinkled on applesauce or yogurt, but the drug/food mixture should be swallowed whole without chewing, and not prepared in advance.

Drink plenty of fluids during treatment with Pentasa, unless otherwise directed by your doctor, to help prevent kidney stones. Your dosage is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment. Use Pentasa regularly to get the most benefit from it and take it at the same time each day to help remember. If your condition does not improve or worsens, inform your doctor.
