What is a Generic in Canada? Health Canada (the Canadian regulatory board) evaluates every Canadian generic for their safety, effectiveness, and quality. Every generic used in Canada has the same medical ingredients as their brand name counterpart and is considered bioequivalent to the brand name medication. The quality standards for brand name drugs and generic drugs are the same. All of the ingredients, facilities, and manufacturing processes must meet Canadian federal guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practices. In addition, Canadian generic manufacturers must perform 'comparative bioavailability' studies to demonstrate that their generic products deliver the same amount of medicinal ingredient at the same rate as the brand name medication. Nearly 45% of all prescriptions filled in Canada use generic medication and some hospitals exclusively use generic drugs. For more information, please visit  http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/med/med-gen-eng.php

About Viagra 100 mg

What is Viagra used for?

Viagra's active ingredient is a medication called sildenafil citrate. Sildenafil is a PDE-5 inhibitor used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is the inability to have or maintain an erection sufficient enough or for long enough for satisfactory sexual performance.

How does Viagra work?

Viagra is a cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. Upon sexual stimulation, nitric oxide (NO) is released in the corpus cavernosum which activates guanylate cyclase, an enzyme which causes the elevation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). This raised level of cGMP results in the relaxation of the smooth muscle of the corpus cavernosum allowing for improved blood flow.

Sildenafil acts to enhance the effect of the NO by inhibition of the PDE5 which is responsible for the breakdown of cGMP. This increase in cGMP results in further relaxation of the smooth muscle and increased blood flow to the penile area.

How do I take Viagra?

Viagra should be taken roughly 30 - 60 minutes prior to sexual activity. Do not use Viagra more than ONCE per day. The usual doses of Viagra is between 25 mg to 100 mg per dose. The maximum daily dose is 100 mg and should be taken as a single dose.

Viagra has an average half-life of around 4 hours but a range of 2 - 8 hours. This means Viagra will work longer or shorter for different people. According to manufacturer's advice, you should engage in sexual activity from 30 minutes to 4 hours after you take a dose.

Can females take Viagra?

Viagra is not indicated for women. Viagra is therefore prescribed off-label if prescribed by a Doctor for a female. A recent study showed that although Viagra may be effective for sexual dysfunction in females it requires a physical arousal.

What are the side effects of Viagra?

Like all drugs, Viagra can cause some side-effects. The most common side-effects of Viagra are listed below; Headache Nasal congestion Facial flushing Indigestion Nausea Abdominal pain Dizziness Throat tightness Myalgia Pain in arms/legs Dry mouth Somnolence

A Short History of Viagra, the accidental wonder drug

In the early 1990's, clinical trials began to bring Viagra to market, but not for the indication it is now so famously known for. Scientists in Sandwich, UK, had been working to create a medication that would work on blocking the PDE5 enzyme to help treat cardiovascular issues such as Angina by way of vasodilating the arteries around the heart. In the early months of stage one in the clinical trials however, some peculiar effects that had not been anticipated were being observed. At the time, Ian Osterloh, the lead clinical researcher, noted that several men were getting erections days after the initial dose of the drug. His initial thought was even if it was true effect 'who would want to take a drug on a Wednesday to get an erection on Saturday?'. However, as the trial progressed many of the trial nurses began reporting that a lot of the men taking the medication were laying on their stomach when they entered the room, and although mild abdominal cramps were being reported the red faced patients had another secret. Around the same time as these results were being reported a separate study was published uncovering the biochemical pathway of erections. This new literature backed the researchers hypothesis, that this new PDE5 inhibiting drug could prove to be a very effective medication for erectile dysfunction.

With millions of dollars already invested in the project it was a brave step to change the direction of the drug development. The research had understandably already attracted some publicity in light of these unexpected results and many ED sufferers had began writting to the research team outlining how important the medication would be for their well-being. This along with the undeniable, dose-response correlation results the research team were finding meant the research changed directions and 12 years after the initial project begun, 4 years after the first ED pilot, the Viagra we know today was brought to market.

Viagra Alternatives and other ED Drugs

Since the successful release of Viagra to the market there have been other successful ED drugs synthesized to work on the same PDE5 enzyme. These drugs have their similarities and differences to Viagra. The preference a patient may have for one of these drugs over another is often down to them trying the different ED medications and choosing the one that gives them optimal effect with the least side-effects.

Viagra vs Cialis

Cialis (tadalafil) was approved by the FDA in 2003, marketed originally as an ED drug, it's licensed was later adapted to be indicated for treatment of pulmonary hypertension and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The key difference in terms of how Cialis compares with Viagra as an ED medication is in its half-life. Cialis, has a much longer half-life (17.5 hours) than Viagra (around 4 hours). This extended half-life has given Cialis a much longer duration of action. Cialis is licensed to work up to 36 hours while Viagra is thought to work for a maximum of around 8 hours. This has given Cialis the nickname 'the weekend pill', as its users report that taking the pill on a Friday night they can still benefit from its therapeutic effects on the Sunday morning.
The side-effects of Cialis can be considered similar to Viagra, with some side-effects such as lower back-pain occurring in a higher percentage of cases. Patient preference between Cialis and Viagra is often decided upon whether the patient prefers a shorter acting medication or the convenience of having the medication work longer and whether the patient tolerates the medication well. Viagra and Cialis are by far the most popular ED medications available today on the market, but another option, Levitra is a third viable option.

Viagra vs Levitra

Levitra (Vardenafil) was licensed for sale for the treatment of ED by the FDA in 2003. Like Viagra and Cialis it works by inhibiting the PDE5 enzyme. It is closer in therapeutic effect to Viagra than Cialis, sharing a closer half-life and thus a similar duration of action.
Side-effects of Levitra are recorded as similar to Viagra and Cialis, with a similar percentage of patients reporting the same adverse effects.

In practice, a patient may prefer one of these ED medication due to how well their perceived effects are and how well they tolerate any adverse effects.

Natural Viagra

Often is the question asked to pharmacists, are there any natural sources of Viagra? Or, can I take something natural that will act like Viagra? The short answer, to save you wasting a lot of time and money is no, but there are definitely some things you can do without medication to help with your ED.

There are no natural sources of Viagra as Viagra is a synthetic compound, meaning it does not exist in nature. If you want something natural that works like Viagra, you certainly won't find anything 'natural' that works in the same dose-response correlation, but you may find some supplements and other practices that help to improve your symptoms of ED.

Firstly, speaking with your Doctor about the potential underlaying conditions causing your ED is important. Some of the conditions that can cause ED are highlighted below. If you understand why you are experiencing erectile dysfunction you will be better placed to take steps to improve your ED and decide whether medication is a viable option. For example, if your ED is a result of psychological issue such as a fear of failure to perform or a fear of losing your erection, then ED medications such as Viagra may be of great help. However, there are other practices you should also consider such as mindfulness meditation and exercise which may help improve well-being and help calm anxiety manifesting in obtrusive thoughts etc. These no money, no side-effect options are worth speaking with your doctor about to see if it may help you with your ED.

Be very careful of purchasing anything online claiming to be a 'natural version of Viagra', or 'herbal Viagra'. These non-prescription options are often a waste of money and only lead to further disheartenment with your condition. You are best to follow the lifestyle advice for ED below and if necessary speak with your doctor about the possibility of using one the prescription ED medications.

What causes Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?

ED can be caused by a number of underlaying conditions both physically, psychological and also due to drug/medication use.

Physical causes include but are not limited to obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, clogged arteries, high blood pressure, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, Peyronie's Disease, multiple sclerosis and surgeries and trauma injuries for example to the nerves and pelvic damage.

Certain medications and other drug use can also lead to erectile dysfunction. Alcoholism and tobacco use as well as the use of other illicit drug use have been shown to cause impotence. Some commonly dispensed medication that have impotence as listed in their side-effects are finasteride, certain antidepressants such as fluoxetine, blood pressure medication such as hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, diuretics such as furosemide and letrozole. There are many other medications that may cause or contribute to erectile dysfunction so always speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you are concerned with ED as a side-effect from a medication.

Psychological issues is a very prominent and often stigmatized cause of erectile dysfunction. Psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, OCD, obtrusive thoughts, stress and relationship issues all weigh in greatly in the causation of contribution towards ED. These psychological issues are often compounded by the symptoms of ED, creating a cyclical downward psychological spiral. Speak with your doctor as soon as possible if you feel you are suffering from any of these psychological conditions and follow the lifestyle advice shown below.

Lifestyle advise to help with Erectile Dysfunction

A healthy mind and body is key to alleviating the symptoms of ED. Below shows some lifestyle tips.

  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet. There has been a lot of talk of studies showing different food sources helping ED. In reality, you should examine your own diet and what it may be lacking. Certain food sources such as flavonoid rich foods, i.e. citrus fruits, dark chocolate and blueberries have been shown to help with ED but again there is no miracle food source for ED. Examine your own diet and choose a healthy, balanced diet. Exercise is an important fundamental in well-being.
  • Exercise has been shown to improved stress levels as well as maintain a healthy body weight, both contributing factors of ED. Quitting smoking Smoking cigarettes has shown to correlate with ED. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist about the best approach for becoming smoke free today.
  • Alcohol and elicit drug use. Alcohol and other elicit drug use such as marijuana, cocaine and amphetamines have all been linked to ED. Limiting alcohol consumption to one to two drinks per session can greatly help.
  • Counselling and meditation can be used to combat psychological issues that contribute to ED. Meditation such as yoga and mindfulness meditation have shown to have dramatic and lasting effect on anxiety and depression, two of the most common psychological conditions contributing to ED. Addressing stress, emotional distress and anxiety/depression can improve or even resolve symptoms of ED.

Viagra Drug -Drug Interactions

Viagra interacts with a number of drugs and even food sources such as grapefruit juice.

Never take any form of nitrate when using Viagra. Nitrates come in oral, sublingual, inhalation and patches and are used to treat angina. Combination of Viagra with nitrates is extremely dangerous and must be avoided at all times.

Other drugs that interact with Viagra include but are not limited to ketoconazole, alpha blocker such as tamsulosin, cimetidine and ritonavir. This list is not complete. Speak with your doctor and pharmacist about the medication you currently take before taking Viagra or any PDE5 inhibitor.

Avoid grapefruit juice when using Viagra as this may spike the level of the Viagra in your body.
