Alesse (Ethinyl Estradiol/Levonorgestrel) Product Information

Alesse is a birth control medication that contains the two active ingredients: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and levonorgestrel (a progestin). It is used to prevent pregnancy, and is available in a treatment of 21 days or 28 days. This medication is used to prevent unplanned pregnancy, but  your doctor may prescribe it to treat other conditions as well.

Directions

It is important to take your Alesse tablets just as your doctor prescribes them, and make sure you don’t extend dosing beyond 24 hours to reduce the chances of failure. When taking Alesse 28, you will need to take a pink pill every day for 21 days, and a light green pill for 7 days. If you are prescribed the 21 day treatment, you will take a pink pill for 21 days, and no pill for 7.

Take your tablet at the same hour every single day. During the first 7 days of starting the pill a secondary form of protection , such as condoms, should be used. Additionally, you may begin your medication on the first Sunday after the start of your menstruation or the first day of your menstrual period. Once you stop taking the pink tablets, expect that withdrawal bleeding might occur by the third day. It may continue until you start taking your next pack of tablets.

If you want to stop using an implant or injection and start taking Alesse, then do it on the day these would be removed(for an implant) or when you would get your next injection. When stopping 21-day pills and starting 28-day pills, wait 7 days after your last pill.

If switching from a 28-day pill regimen, start taking Alesse after your last tablet. Continue taking Alesse even if you are spotting or having breakthrough bleeding.

Side Effects

There are several side effects, but you may not experience all of them. The common ones are acne, amenorrhea, breast changes, dizziness, fluid retention, mood swings, nausea, rashes, and temporary infertility after stoppage. It is also possible to have nervousness and hirsutism.

If you notice that you cannot tolerate your side effects, talk to your gynecologist.

Prior to taking these birth control pills, there are certain precautions you should take. These include:

  • Avoid using the medicine when pregnant
