Indications

Wellbutrin SR is an antidepressant medication used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Bupropion is an aminoketone antidepressant drug that inhibits the neuronal reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine and affects the mechanisms of these chemicals in your brain. These actions help increase the availability of noradrenaline and dopamine to balance your brain chemicals. Thanks to this, Wellbutrin SR can reduce your symptoms of MDD and SAD.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Wellbutrin SR that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual and depressive disorder being treated. Follow all your healthcare provider’s directions of use and read packaging instructions for the best therapeutic response. Do not change your dose or suddenly stop taking Wellbutrin.

  • Swallow tablet whole, do not crush or chew
  • Take doses at the same time each day with or without food
  • Do not take any other medications during treatment with Wellbutrin unless told to do so by your healthcare provider
  • Wellbutrin SR may take several weeks to provide an improvement in your MDD symptoms
  • Continue taking Wellbutrin SR as prescribed even if you feel well
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

To treat MDD and SAD:

  • Adults should take a low dose and gradually increase to reduce the risk of seizures
  • The first three days of treatment, adults should take 150mg once daily in the morning
  • Following these 3 days, doses can increase to 150mg taken twice daily
  • Doses should be taken at least 8 hours apart
  • Adults should not take more than 400mg daily taken as 200mg twice a day
  • Patients with severe liver impairment should take no more than 100mg daily or 150mg taken every other day

Cautions

    • Eating disorder like anorexia or bulimia
    • If you have recently suddenly stopped using alcohol, seizure medicine, or a sedative
  • Do not use a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) for 14 days before or after taking Wellbutrin SR because the medications could cause a dangerous interaction. MAOIs include isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, and rasagiline.
  • Wellbutrin SR may cause you to have seizures, especially if you have a history of certain medical conditions or take specific drugs. Start treatment at a low dose and gradually increase to reduce your risk.
  • To ensure your safety when taking Wellbutrin, tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had any of the following:
    • Head injury, seizures
    • Brain or spinal cord tumour
    • Narrow-angle glaucoma

Speak with your healthcare provider before you stop drinking if you normally drink regularly because doing so could increase your chance of developing a seizure.
  • Wellbutrin SR could cause you to become dizzy, drowsy, or have changes in your vision. Avoid driving or performing hazardous tasks until you know how this medication will affect you.
  • If you are pregnant, speak with your healthcare provider about risks and benefits of treatment with Wellbutrin SR. It is unclear how this medication may affect your unborn baby, but having a relapse in your depression may be dangerous. Do not stop taking Wellbutrin without first speaking to your healthcare provider.
  • Ask your healthcare provider before breastfeeding while taking Wellbutrin SR because it may or may not affect your nursing child.
  • Some drugs may interact with Wellbutrin SR and cause adverse reactions. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicines, but especially any of the following:

FAQ

How many hours apart should you take Wellbutrin SR?

It is recommended that you take your daily doses of Wellbutrin SR at least 8 hours apart. Take your doses at the same times each day for the best results. When you first start treatment, your healthcare provider may prescribe you to take Wellbutrin once a day for the first 3 days. In this instance, you should take your doses in the morning each day.

Can you take Wellbutrin SR at night instead of in the morning?

Wellbutrin SR maintenance doses are usually taken twice each day at least 8 hours apart and not exceeding 200mg at once. When starting treatment, however, it is often recommended that you take a low dose every morning for 3 days.

This is because Wellbutrin may affect your ability to fall asleep. If you experience insomnia, try to take your last dose of the day sooner before going to bed.
