What is Oralair (Grass Pollen Extract)?

Oralair (mixed pollen extract) is a dissolved-under-the-tongue tablet that treats grass pollen allergies. Before your provider may prescribe this medication, you must have a skin test or a lab test to ensure that your allergy will respond to it. Because Oralair (mixed pollen extract) can induce life-threatening allergic reactions, the initial dose should be administered under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Oralair (mixed pollen extract) is derived from five grass pollens: sweet vernal, orchard, perennial rye, timothy, and Kentucky bluegrass. Its mechanism of action is unknown. However, it can cure grass pollen allergy symptoms by altering how your immune system reacts to grass pollens.

What is Oralair (Grass Pollen Extract) Used For?

Sweet vernal, orchard, perennial rye, Kentucky bluegrass, or Timothy grass pollens produce allergic rhinitis (seasonal allergy). A healthcare provider must supervise the initial dosage. Take Oralair (mixed pollen extract) four months before and for the grass pollen season.  Adults 18-65 years old: 300 indexes of reactivity (IR) dissolved under the tongue once a day is the typical dose for Oralair (mixed pollens extract). On day one, a typical starting dose for Oralair (mixed pollen extract) is 100 IR dissolved beneath your child’s tongue. Your child’s amount will be increased every day for three days until they achieves a maintenance dose of 300 IR once a day.  Wait to immediately consume Oralair (mixed pollen extract) after placing the tablet in your mouth. Allow the tablet to melt beneath your tongue first. Wait 1 minute after the tablet has completely dissolved before swallowing. The drug enters your body through the area beneath your tongue. If you consume too soon, your body may only absorb part of the dose of medication. After taking Oralair, wait 5 minutes before eating or drinking anything (mixed pollen extract). Oralair (pollen extract mixture) can induce severe, life-threatening allergic responses. You’ll need auto-injectable epinephrine (EpiPen) to open your airways and save your life during an allergic reaction while you wait for medical treatment. If you don’t already have one, request one from your doctor and pick it up at your local drugstore. Your provider or pharmacist will teach you when and how to use your auto-injectable epinephrine syringe. Ensure you understand the symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, including difficulty breathing, throat swelling, rash, and rapid heartbeat. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately.

Warnings and Interactions for Oralair (Grass Pollen Extract)

Oralair can have significant health consequences. This danger may be considerably greater for specific groups. If you are concerned, discuss alternate options with your doctor or pharmacist.

Severe allergic responses

A history of severe allergic reactions is one of the risk factors. Oralair can cause severe, sometimes fatal allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis. As a result, your first dose of this medication will be administered at your provider’s office, and you will be watched for at least 30 minutes after that. You should obtain an auto-injectable epinephrine (EpiPen) and be instructed on how to use it before beginning Oralair (mixed pollens extract).

If you have certain medical conditions that make it less likely for you to survive an allergic reaction (e.g., lung problems, a recent heart attack, or uncontrolled asthma), or if you’re taking medications that may prevent epinephrine or rescue inhalers from working correctly, Oralair (mixed pollens extract) may not be recommended for you (e.g., beta-blockers). Consult your doctor to check if Oralair (mixed pollen extract) is good for you. If you have difficulties breathing, chest tightness, swelling of your lips or tongue, or a rash, inject your epinephrine syringe into your thigh muscle and call 911 immediately.

Having trouble breathing

Oralair may induce side effects such as tongue or throat swelling, making breathing difficult. Stop using Oralair and notify your healthcare practitioner if you experience any side effects that cause difficulty breathing.

Having difficulty swallowing (eosinophilic esophagitis)

Rarely, a disease known as eosinophilic esophagitis has been described in persons taking Oralair-like drugs (mixed pollens extract). This occurs when your body’s immune system assaults the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach, causing symptoms such as chest pain and difficulty eating or drinking. If you encounter these side effects, stop taking Oralair (mixed pollen extract) and inform your provider.

Most Common Questions About Oralair

Is it safe to use Oralair (mixed pollen extract) when pregnant?

Because it hasn’t been researched in pregnant women, there isn’t enough evidence to tell if Oralair (mixed pollen extract) is safe during pregnancy. High doses of Oralair (mixed pollen extract) did not harm pregnant women or their unborn babies in animal experiments. If you’re pregnant or want to get pregnant, talk to your doctor about the dangers and advantages to you and your unborn child.

How long should I take Oralair (mixed pollen extract)?

It is recommended that you take Oralair daily four months before each grass pollen season and continue taking it daily for the duration of the grass pollen season. When grass pollen season is past, you can discontinue using Oralair. To treat your allergy problems, you’ll need to take it during each grass pollen season because the alleviation won’t continue if you stop taking it.
