Imuran (Azathioprine) Medication Information

Uses

Imuran is used in kidney transplants to prevent rejection. It is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. 

Dosage

The tablets are available in 50 mg strength. 

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Imuran include:

• Leukopenia
• Lymphoma
• Infections 
• Nausea
• Vomiting

Precautions

Patients on Imuran are at risk for changes in blood count, so they should have their blood monitored weekly during the first month, bimonthly for the second and third months, then monthly. 

It is recommended for some patients to receive TPMT genetic testing to ensure that they are able to metabolize the drug properly. 

Severe nausea and vomiting have been reported in some patients. These side effects usually disappear when the medication is stopped.

• Sulfasalazine
• Mesalamine
• Warfarin
• Ribavirin

Storage

Store between at room temperature (59-77ºF).  Protect Imuran from light, and place it in a dry place.

• Imuran does require you to have blood counts checked frequently.
• There is a risk of infection when taking Imuran, if you have a fever, chills, or confusion, seek medical attention.
• There is a risk to unborn babies exposed to Azathioprine, and women should not become pregnant is they are taking Imuran.

Patients can stay on Imuran indefinitely, but using it for a long time can place patients at risk for developing cancer. 

What does Imuran do to the body?

Imuran is an immunosuppressant, and it works by weakening the immune system. This is useful in a kidney transplant so your body does not attack your new kidney, and in rheumatoid arthritis, to stop your immune system from damaging your joints. 

Should I take Imuran in the morning or evening?

Imuran is most commonly taken once a day, it can be taken in the morning or evening, but should be taken at the same time every day. 

Can I stop Imuran abruptly?

If you stop taking Imuran without starting another medication, your body can start to reject your kidney, and you may suffer joint damage from your rheumatoid arthritis.
