Nitrostat (Nitroglycerin) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat chest pain(angina) in people with heart conditions like coronary artery disease. This drug may also prevent chest pain when used before physical activities like exercise and sexual activity. Angina is a pain that keeps returning when the heart does not get enough blood. It feels like a pressing or squeezing pain in the chest underneath the breastbone. You may also feel angina in your neck, jaws, shoulder, and arms. The active ingredient in Nitrostat is Nitroglycerin. Nitroglycerin belongs to a class of drugs called nitrates. It works by dilating blood vessels to improve blood flow and make it easier for the heart to pump blood. It also increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart while reducing its workload.
