Usage

Elidel (Pimecroliumus) is a prescription topical cream used to treat mild to moderate eczema in adults and children over the age of two years old. This cream is typically used in people who should not use or have responded to other eczema medications. Pimecrolimus belongs to a class of drugs known as topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs). This drug is an immunosuppressant; It works by decreasing the body's immune system to help slow down the growth of atopic dermatitis on the skin. Elidel is indicated to be used for short periods only. However, if necessary, treatment with Elidel can be repeated with breaks in between treatment periods. Elidel is not for long-term use, let your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after using this medication for 6 weeks.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Elidel cream may include burning, stinging or tingling of the treated skin area (more prominent during the first few days of treatment, cold symptoms such as fever, chills, sore throat, body aches, swollen glands, cough, headache, viral skin infection.,

Stop using Elidel Cream and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Severe burning, pain, itching of the treated skin;
• New or worsened skin symptoms such as warts, new rash or skin lesion;
• Viral skin infection – mouth cold sores, skin sores;
• A mole with new color or different size

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Elidel cream if you are allergic to Pimecrolimus, or if you have a bacterial or viral infection. Before you start using Elidel cream, tell your doctor about your medical history especially if you have:
• A weak immune system such as in patients who have undergone organ transplants;
• Any type of skin infection such as herpes, warts, shingles, chickenpox;
• Using light therapy such as UVA or UVB
Netherton's syndrome;
• Skin cancer

Do not use Elidel cream on an area that may be affected with skin cancer. Elidel can lower your body's ability to fight infections. Inform your doctor if you have been exposed to any illness or if you have any signs of an infection. You should not use Elidel on areas where you are using other medications. Avoid exposure to sunlight, tanning beds, and phototherapy treatments with UVA or UVB light. Wear loose clothes over the treated areas of your skin if you have to be outdoors. Do not use sunscreen on treated skin unless advised by your doctor. Drinking alcohol while you are using Elidel cream may cause your skin or face to feel hot and become red.

You should also tell your doctor about all the medications you use including prescription, OTC, herbal products and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Pimecrolimus and other topical steroids, other ointments, lotions, and creams. Not all possible drug interactions are listed here. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions regarding drug interactions that you may have. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 6 weeks of treatment. Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Elidel cream should not be used in children younger than 2 years old.
