Imitrex (Sumatriptan) Dosage and Side Effects

IMITREX a prescription medicine used to treat migraine headaches in adults.

Proper Use of this medication

Your doctor will prescribe the right dose for you.

After the first recommended dose, you may be advised to take a second dose two hours or more later, if your migraine has not resolved. The maximum daily dose of IMITREX tablets is 200 mg in a 24-hour time period.

An additional dose of the injection can also be given if the first dose does not work and two hours or more have passed.

IMITREX Overdose

In clinical trials, headache suffers who got single doses of 140 to 300 mg did not have adverse reactions. Volunteers who took up to 400 mg did not suffer adverse reactions. Even so, doctors advise not taking more than 200 mg of IMITREX in a 24-hour period and only using it as directed by your doctor.

If you think you have taken too much IMITREX, call your doctor right away or go to the closest emergency room.

Missed Dose of IMITREX

IMITREX is meant to be taken as soon as headache pain begins, and you must wait at least two hours before taking another dose.

It's important not to use more IMITREX than directed by your doctor, and no more than 200 mg in 24 hours.
