Indications

Precose is a diabetes medication used to treat type 2 diabetes by controlling blood sugar levels.

Acarbose is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor that reduces blood sugar by inhibiting your body’s digestion of carbohydrates. This action stimulates and increases glucagon-like peptide 1 after you eat meals to increase insulin production. Precose supports proper insulin production and control when taken after meals thanks to these effects.

This diabetes medication is an effective method of treatment for those with type 2 diabetes and helps prevent diabetes in those with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Precose is generally well-tolerated and safe to use with minimal gastrointestinal effects at the beginning of treatment which fade.

Uses and Dosage

The dose prescribed of Precose will vary depending on the individual being treated. Follow all your doctor’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully to ensure the best results.

  • Swallow tablets whole
  • Take with the first bite of each main meal
  • Adults usually take an initial dose of 25mg three times a day
  • Doses can be titrated starting with 25mg once daily to minimize gastrointestinal effects
  • Doses can be increased to 50mg or 100mg three times daily at 4 or 8 week interv
  • Most adults take 50 to 100mg three times a day
  • Adults should not take more than 100mg thrice daily
  • Patients weighing 60kg and less should not take more than 50mg thrice daily
  • Monitor blood sugar levels regularly while taking Precose
  • Use a glucagon injection kit if you have severely low blood sugar levels and cannot eat or drink
  • Precose should be part of a treatment program that includes diet and exercise
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

Side Effects

Precose may cause some side effects to develop while stimulating glucose production after meals. Speak with your doctor if you have any concerns regarding symptoms that you may experience while taking acarbose.

Common Precose side effects:

  • Upset stomach, gas, bloating
  • Mild diarrhea
  • Mild skin rash or itching

Serious Side Effects

Some more serious adverse effects may occur when taking Acarbose. Stop using Precose and contact your doctor if you develop any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe constipation
  • Severe stomach pain, water or bloody diarrhea
  • Easy bruising, unusual bleeding, purple or red spots under your skin
  • Liver problems (nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-coloured stool, jaundice)

Allergic Reactions

Do not use Precose if you are allergic to acarbose or any of the tablet’s other listed ingredients. If you notice signs of an allergic reaction, stop taking this diabetes medication and contact your doctor.

Precose allergy symptoms may include:

  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat

Cautions

Take Precose with the first bite of your meal for the best therapeutic results. If it has been longer than 15 minutes since you started eating your meal, you can still take your dose of acarbose, but it may be less effective.

Do not drink alcohol while taking Precose because it can lower your blood sugar and effect the medicine’s ability to maintain your glucose levels.

Avoid taking digestive enzymes like pancreatin, amylase, or lipase at the same time as PRecose because they can make it more difficult for your body to absorb acarbose.

Do not use Precose if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • A blockage in your intestinal tract
  • Digestive disorder that affects your intestines
  • An intestinal ulcer
  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis

To ensure your safety when taking Precose, tell your doctor if you have any of the following:

  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Bowel or intestinal disorder
  • Stomach disorder

Some drugs can interact with acarbose and cause adverse reactions. To avoid this, tell your doctor about all the medications that you take, including over the counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

Your risk of developing high blood sugar will increase if you use Precose with other drugs that increase your blood sugar levels. Tell your doctor about any such medications that you take, especially any of the following:

  • Isoniazid
  • Niacin
  • Nicotine patches or gum
  • Birth control pills and other hormones
  • Diuretic medication
  • Heart or blood pressure medicine
  • Insulin or other oral diabetes medication
  • Diet pills, stimulants, or medication used to treat asthma, colds, or allergies
  • Phenothiazines
  • Seizure medications
  • Steroids
  • Thyroid medicine

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant so they can monitor your condition. Acarbose should not cause harm to an unborn baby.

Acarbose may or may not pass into breastmilk and affect your nursing child. Do not breastfeed while taking Precose.

Precose is not an approved treatment for anyone under the age of 18.

FAQ

What should you avoid when taking Precose?

You should avoid drinking alcohol during treatment with Precose because it can lower your blood sugar levels and make it more difficult to manage your diabetes. If you take digestive enzymes, such as pancreatin, amylase, or lipase, avoid taking them at the same time as your acarbose dose to ensure your body can fully absorb the medications.

When is the best time to take Precose?

Precose should be taken three times a day at the beginning of each meal for the best therapeutic results. If more than 15 minutes have passed after you start eating, you can still take your Precose dose, but it may be less effective because your body won’t absorb as much of the acarbose.
