What Is Asacol HD Used For

Asacol HD belongs to the class of 5-aminosalicylic acid derivatives; it is prescribed to reduce and treat ulcerative colitis UC symptoms such as diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and stomach pain. Ulcerative colitis is a long-term inflammatory bowel disease in the colon and rectum.

Asacol HD contains mesalamine, which blocks cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase activity to reduce prostaglandins production, which is responsible for the inflammation and pain being felt; the blocking action results in a decreased inflammation in the colon and rectum.

Asacol HD Dosing

Some medical conditions may affect how Asacol HD works; ensure to inform the healthcare professional assisting you about your medical history, particularly allergy to salicylates, skin problems, kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease, and phenylketonuria. The dose of Asacol HD is different for each patient depending on their medical condition, response to the treatment, and weight; to avoid drug interactions, inform your doctor if you are taking other medicines.

Asacol HD 800 mg tablet is the only strength of this medication taken on an empty stomach at least one hour before or two hours after a meal. Asacol HD tablet should be swallowed whole, not cut, crushed, or chewed to prevent destroying its delayed release action, for it is designed to be released exactly on the colon. It is usually prescribed to be taken three times a day for six weeks; to help achieve the optimal results, it is recommended to be taken at a regular time daily. If a dose is forgotten, take it as soon as recalled, but if it’s nearly the time of the next intake schedule, skip the missed dose and proceed on the next scheduled intake; do not take two doses in one time.

Lialda vs Asacol HD

Both medicines belong to the class of aminosalicylates and contain mesalamine. They are prescribed in treating symptoms of ulcerative colitis and have similar side effects. These medicines may be alike, but they differ in the scope of work; Asacol HD is indicated for a treatment period of six weeks to help relieve active symptoms of ulcerative colitis. In contrast, Lialda has two functions: to treat active symptoms and prevent the symptoms from coming back.

Asacol HD is available in one strength of 800 mg taken three times a day on an empty stomach. Lialda is also available in one strength of 1.2 g taken once a day with food. Both medicines may be effective, but your doctor is the one who will assess which medication is suitable for your condition.
