Indications

Requip XL has some of the same effects as a chemical called dopamine, which occurs naturally in your body. Low levels of dopamine in the brain are associated with Parkinson’s disease.

Use and Dosage

Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start taking ropinirole and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. Taking this medication with food may decrease the risk of nausea. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush or chew the tablets. Doing so can release the entire drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose to reduce the risk of side effects. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day. If you stop taking this medication for several days, you may need to slowly increase your dose back to your previous dosage. Talk with your doctor about how to restart this medication.

Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when this medication is suddenly stopped. Also, if you suddenly stop using this medication, you may have withdrawal symptoms (such as anxiety, depression, confusion, fever, muscle stiffness). To help prevent withdrawal, your doctor may lower your dose slowly. Withdrawal is more likely if you have used ropinirole for a long time or in high doses. Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Some people taking Requip XL have fallen asleep during normal daytime activities such as working, talking, eating, or driving. Tell your doctor if you have any problems with daytime sleepiness or drowsiness.

You may have increased sexual urges, unusual urges to gamble, or other intense urges while taking Requip XL. Talk with your doctor if this occurs.

Serious side effects include:

• Extreme drowsiness or falling asleep suddenly (even after feeling alert)
• Worsening or no improvement in your symptoms
• A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
• Unusual changes in mood or behavior
• Tremors, twitching, or uncontrollable muscle movements
• Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real)

Side effects such as confusion or hallucinations may be more likely in older adults.

Common side effects of Requip XL may include:

• Drowsiness, dizziness, or weakness
• Headache, confusion, or hallucinations
• Increased blood pressure (severe headache, pounding in your neck or ears, nosebleed, or irregular heartbeats)
• Nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, or constipation
• Flu symptoms (fever, chills, or body aches)
• Sudden muscle movements
• Increased sweating
• Swelling in your legs or feet

Cautions
