Uloric (Febuxostat) belongs to the class of medications called xanthine oxidase inhibitors. This medication is used to reduce uric acid levels in people with gout. Febuxostat works by blocking the formation of uric acid in the body. The buildup of uric acid can lead to gout or kidney stones. The recommended dose of Febuxostat is 40 or 80mg once daily with or without food.

The common side effects may include gout flares, joint pain, liver problems, nausea and rash. The serious side effects may include:

• Vision changes

You should not take Uloric if you are allergic to Febuxostat or if you are taking azathioprine or mercaptopurine. Your gout may flare up when you start taking Uloric; do not stop taking Uloric even if you have a flare. It is unknown whether Uloric will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication. It is unknown whether Febuxostat passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not take this medication without talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. There may be an interaction between Febuxostat and other medications such as azathioprine, didanosine, mercaptopurine, and theophylline.
