What is Asacol?

Asacol (Mesalamine) is a brand name prescription medication used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease.

This medication relieves the symptoms of mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis such as stomach pain, cramping, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding, and prevents further episodes of this condition.

Mesalamine can also be used to treat and prevent relapse of mild-to-moderate Crohn’s disease.

How does Asacol work?

Asacol contains the active ingredient mesalamine, which is an aminosalicylate, belonging to the class of drugs known as anti-inflammatory.

Prostaglandins and leukotrienes are chemicals that cause inflammation. This medication inhibits the production of these two chemicals by blocking the actions of cyclooxygenase, which produces prostaglandins, and lipoxygenase, which produces leukotrienes. This action results in reducing inflammation in the colon and rectum.

This prescription drug also acts as an antioxidant and prevents the movement of macrophages (inflammatory cells) into the intestinal wall, protecting the walls of the intestine from cell damage.

Asacol dosage and how to take it
