What is Pataday used for?

Pataday is an antihistamine. Also called olopatadine, Pataday’s role is to minimize the naturally-made histamine in the body. Histamine is associated with allergic symptoms like watery eyes and itching. So, when you take an antihistamine medicine like Pataday, all these symptoms can go away. Pataday is used to treat the eye and is able to cure burning, itching, and excess watering among other symptoms caused by allergies. Unless you are allergic to Pataday, it should work for you.

How to use Pataday eye drops?

If your doctor has prescribed Pataday for your eyes, then it will be necessary to follow their instructions closely. Hence, never try to take a smaller or bigger dose than advised. Additionally, never take this medicine for a longer period than needed. Prior to using your eye drops, wash and dry your hands properly. Then, slightly slant your head back and pull down your lower eyelid until you notice a tiny sac.

Holding the dropper above your eye so that the tip is facing down, look away and squeeze out one drop only. Close that eye for two to three minutes and tilt your head down. Don’t blink your eye at all; softly press your finger to the inner corner of your eye for a minute. This is to stop the liquid from getting inside your tear duct. Wait until ten minutes are over to put any other eye drops product your doctor has recommended.

It is important to keep your dropper from contamination as it could infect your eyes. If you notice that the color of the eye drops has changed, avoid using them. Instead, call your pharmacist or doctor for a new product. If you forget a dose, take it as fast as you can recall. Otherwise, do not take the dose if the next one you have scheduled is near.

What are the side effects of using Pataday?

Pataday can cause serious and mild side effects. The former are rare and if they occur, you should stop using Pataday and call your eye physician. As for the mild ones, they are rather common and include the following:

  • Dryness in the eye
  • Hazy vision
  • Mild irritation in the eye
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Bad taste in your mouth
  • Feeling as if you have an object in your eye.

If any of the common side effects worsen, let your eye doctor learn about it.

What are the precautions of using Pataday eye drops?

Prior to taking Pataday, ensure that you take some precautions first. Doing this will ensure your safety. So, do the following:

  • Avoid Pataday if you have an allergy to its potent ingredient.
  • Inform your doctor about any eye infection you currently have.
  • As it is not clear whether Pataday could harm a fetus, tell your doctor if you are expectant or planning to get pregnant.
  • Tell your physician if you are lactating as it is not clear whether Pataday can be absorbed into the breast milk and harm your child.
  • This medicine should never be shared without prior medical advice.
