Relpax (Eletriptan) belongs to the class of medications known as 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor agonists. Relpax is used to treat migraine headaches. This medication will only treat a headache that has already begun. It does not prevent headaches or reduce the number of attacks. Migraine headaches are thought to be caused by the dilation (widening) of the blood vessels in the head. Eletriptan works by causing the blood vessels of the head to constrict. For most people, Eletriptan eliminates or reduces the symptoms of migraine attacks including headache, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Most people notice an effect within 2 hours after taking the medication. The recommended dose of Eletriptan for an adult is one 20 mg or 40 mg tablet taken at the first sign of a migraine headache. If your headache improves but returns after the initial dose of 20 mg, an additional 20 mg dose may be taken at least 2 hours after the first dose.

Manufacturer Information

We currently have the brand from Turkey and UK manufactured by Pfizer. The generic Eletriptan comes from Canada manufactured by Teva (also called Teva-Eletriptan) and GenMed (GD-Eletriptan). Relpax is available in tablet form and strengths of 20 mg and 40 mg.

Stop using Eletriptan and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

• Chest pain;
• Heavy feeling, tightness, or pressure in the arms, chest, jaw, neck, or shoulder;
• Irregular heartbeat;
• Significantly high blood pressure;
• Signs of an allergic reaction (shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of the eyes, mouth, lips, or throat);
• Slow heartbeat;
• Stomach pain with bloody diarrhea

Less serious side effects may include:

• Dizziness, drowsiness, weakness;
• Dry mouth, upset stomach, stomach pain or cramps;
• Mild headache (not a migraine);
• Pressure or heavy feeling in any part of your body;
• Warmth, redness, or mild tingling under your skin

You should not take Relpax if you are allergic to Eletriptan. Relpax should not be used to treat a common tension headache or any headache that seems to be different from your usual migraine headaches. Use this medication only if your condition has been confirmed by doctor as migraine headaches. There may be an interaction between Eletriptan and other medications such as clarithromycin, fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, verapamil, etc. It is unknown whether Relpax will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using Relpax. Eletriptan can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without informing your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. This medication should not be used by anyone under 18 years old.
