WHAT IS BYSTOLIC?  

Bystolic (Nebivolol) is a prescription drug that helps treat hypertension or high blood pressure. Nebivolol belongs to a class of drugs called beta-blockers, which works by blocking the effects of certain natural substances in the nervous system called epinephrine, commonly known as adrenaline. Doing so lowers blood pressure and strengthens the prevention of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney problems. Beta-blockers also affect the blood flow or circulation in your body. 

BYSTOLIC PRECAUTIONS 

Before taking Bystolic, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to it, or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you have a family history or medical condition of: 

  • Slow Heartbeat 
  • Heart Rhythm Problems 
  • Blood Circulation Problems 
  • Breathing Problems 
  • Kidney Disease 
  • Liver Disease 
  • Heart Failure 
  • Mood or Mental Disorder 
  • Myasthenia Gravis 
  • Sick Sinus Syndrome 
  • Overactive Thyroid Disease 

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness as this medication causes you to experience dizziness. Avoid alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) while taking this medication to avoid making yourself dizzier 

Before undergoing surgery or a dental procedure, make sure the doctor or dentist is aware that you are taking this medication. 

Taking this medication when you have diabetes may cause a gradual decrease in your blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Monitor your blood sugar regularly and talk to your doctor for the proper medication, exercise program, and diet plan. 

Pediatric patients are at a higher risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia when taking this medication, especially if they are vomiting or skipping meals. 

Sudden withdrawal from this medication may cause an increased risk of heart problems such as severe chest pain or heart attack or worsen your medical condition. 

BYSTOLIC SIDE EFFECTS 

The common side effects of Bystolic are trouble sleeping, slow heartbeat, vomiting/nausea, diarrhea, stomach/abdominal pain, tiredness, lightheadedness, dizziness, and headache. Stop taking Bystolic and report side effects to your healthcare provider and seek medical attention if you start experiencing:

BYSTOLIC DOSAGE

This medication comes in four strengths: Bystolic 2.5 mg, Bystolic 5 mg, Bystolic 10 mg, and Bystolic 20 mg.  

For the treatment of hypertension, the recommended dosage is 5 mg taken orally once daily. This dosage may be increased by your healthcare provider every 2 weeks, but must not exceed 40 mg/day. It is possible to take Bystolic tablets either with or without food. 

In patients with renal impairment, the recommended starting dosage is 2.5 mg taken orally once daily. This dosage may be increased by your healthcare provider every 2 weeks, but must not exceed 40 mg/day. 

In patients with hepatic impairment, the recommended starting dosage is 2.5 mg taken orally once daily. This dosage may be increased by your healthcare provider every 2 weeks, but must not exceed 40 mg/day. 

In case you missed a dose, take the medication tablet as soon as you remember. However, it is almost time for the next scheduled dose for your condition, skip the missed dose and take the next one.  

In case of overdose or experiencing symptoms of overdose such as fainting or trouble breathing, call the local emergency hotline and seek medical attention immediately.
