What is Effexor XR?

Effexor XR is the brand name of venlafaxine, which is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Effexor XR is used to treat adults who have mental health conditions such as major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder.

Effexor XR works by blocking the reuptake of two neurotransmitters called serotonin and norepinephrine that transmit nerve signals and are involved in regulating mood.

Effexor XR dosage

Effexor XR comes in an extended-release capsule and is available in three different strengths, 37.5 mg, 75 mg, and 150 mg.

The following are the recommended Effexor XR dosages for each condition:

For the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in adults, the initial dose is 75 mg once per day. A maintenance dose is 75 to 225 mg once per day. The maximum dose for moderately depressed outpatients is 225 mg per day.

-For patients who need time to adjust to the medication, it is desirable to give an initial dose of 37.5 mg per day for 4 to 7 days before increasing to 75 mg a day. Doses may be raised in daily increments of up to 75 mg at intervals of not less than 4 days.

For the treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder in adults, the initial dose is 75 mg once per day. The maintenance dose is 75 to 225 mg once per day. The maximum dose should not be more than 225 mg a day.

For the treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder in adults, the initial dose is 75 mg once a day. There is no proof that doses higher than 75 mg per day confer further benefit.

For the treatment of panic disorder in adults, the initial dose is 37.5 mg once a day for 1 week. Patients who do not respond to 75 mg a day may benefit from dose increases to a maximum of approximately 225 mg a day. Dose increases should be in increments of up to 75 mg a day, as needed, and at intervals of not less than 7 days (one week).

Direction

Caution

Do not take Effexor XR if you are allergic to it or to any of its active and inactive components.

Do not take Effexor XR if you presently take or have taken within the last 2 weeks (14 days) an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, or tranylcypromine.

Effexor XR should not be given to those who are below 18 years old because it has not been approved for use in pediatric patients.
