Mederma is an over-the-counter medication used to treat or prevent dry, rough, scaly, itchy skin. Dry and rough skin is a common condition that affects people of all ages. Cold, dry weather, sun damage, harsh soaps, and overbathing are common causes of dry, scaly skin. The drug also treats minor skin irritations like diaper rash or skin burns from radiation therapy. Mederma does not contain an active ingredient and is less likely to cause skin irritation. The medication is used as a moisturizer. Mederma belongs to a class of drugs called emollients. It works by softening and moisturizing the skin and decreases itching and flaking.
