Usage

Differin (Adapalene) is a prescription topical cream/gel used to treat mild to moderate acne (pimples) where comedones, papules, and pustules predominate. It effectively treats acne on the face, chest, or back. The active ingredient in Differin cream is Adapalene. Adapalene belongs to the class of medicine called retinoids. It works by affecting the growth of cells and decreasing swelling and inflammation. Applying Adapalene to the areas of your skin with acne will help unblock pores and prevent breakouts, blackheads, whiteheads, blemishes, and clogged pores.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Differin are scaling, skin peeling, discomfort, burning or stinging sensation, skin dryness, sunburn, and skin itching.

Stop using Differin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Acne flare;
• Conjunctivitis;
• Skin redness, stinging, burning, or peeling after sun exposure;
• Skin discoloration;
• Severe skin discoloration;
• Worsening of the acne

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Adapalene, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it, or Vitamin A-related drugs (other retinoids such as isotretinoin), or if you have any other allergies. Differin (Adapalene) comes as a topical cream/gel and should be applied on the part of the skin with acne. You should avoid getting Differin gel or cream in your eyes. If it does touch your eyes, rinse with water and soap immediately. Do not use this medicine on sunburned, windburned, dry, chapped, irritated, or broken skin. Also, avoid using this medication in wounds or areas of eczema. It would be best if you used Differin cream as directed by your doctor and do not use more than your dosage to prevent worsening side effects.

Do not use other medication skin products unless your doctor has told you to. Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Differin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and sunburn may result. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing if you must be out in the sun. It may take several weeks before your acne improves, and it may get slightly worse for a short time when you first start using Differin. Inform your doctor if there is no significant improvement in your acne despite following your doctor's instructions carefully.

Before you start using Differin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Eczema infections;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Skin cancer or chronic skin conditions

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. You should use it with caution if you are pregnant. It is unknown if Differin passes into your breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Adapalene has no known severe interactions with other drugs; however, caution should be applied with steroid-containing creams.
