Indications

Polysporin Triple Antibiotic Ointment is a topical medication used for the prevention and treatment of minor skin infections. It contains a combination of three different antibiotics: bacitracin, polymyxin B, and gramicidin. These antibiotics work together to kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria on the skin, helping to prevent infection and promote healing.

Use and Dosage

Apply the ointment 1 to 3 times a day over the affected area. Cover with a dressing or leave exposed as directed by your doctor. Do not use the ointment in your eyes.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of the reach of children.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

Side Effects

Burning, redness, or irritation of the skin may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

If your doctor has prescribed this medication, remember that your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including balance/hearing problems, and small red bumps on the skin (folliculitis).

Rarely, use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a fungal infection or a different bacterial skin infection. Contact your doctor if you notice any new unusual skin symptoms (such as scaling, swelling, or hot skin) while using this medication. A different medication may need to be used.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
