Uses
Your doctor may prescribe Latuda to treat the conditions schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Schizophrenia is a thought disorder characterized by invasive thoughts and trouble processing reality. It is a chronic condition that usually develops in early adulthood. Symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking and speech, disorganized movements, and negative symptoms.
Latuda is also approved for the treatment of bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder characterized by large swings in mood, ranging from depression to mania. Each swing can last several months and is soon extreme that it interferes with daily living.
Latuda is usually given in combination with other medication but can be used by itself to treat either one.
Latuda works by blocking dopamine receptors and certain serotonin receptors in the brain. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are thought to be caused by an imbalance of dopamine and serotonin. Latuda helps to restore the balance and resolve symptoms.
Dosage
Your doctor will pick the best dose based on your condition.
For schizophrenia, the starting dose is 40 mg by mouth once daily. The dose may be increased to a maximum of 160 mg by mouth once daily.
For bipolar disorder, the starting dose is 20 mg by mouth once daily. Your doctor may increase the dose to a maximum of 120 mg by mouth once daily.
Side Effects
Side effects that happen in more than 5% of people in clinical trials include:

Precautions
Latuda has a black-box warning label for elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis. Latuda and other antipsychotics can increase the risk of death.
