What is a Generic in Canada? Health Canada (the Canadian regulatory board) evaluates every Canadian generic for their safety, effectiveness, and quality. Every generic used in Canada has the same medical ingredients as their brand name counterpart and is considered bioequivalent to the brand name medication. The quality standards for brand name drugs and generic drugs are the same. All of the ingredients, facilities, and manufacturing processes must meet Canadian federal guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practices. In addition, Canadian generic manufacturers must perform 'comparative bioavailability' studies to demonstrate that their generic products deliver the same amount of medicinal ingredient at the same rate as the brand name medication. Nearly 45% of all prescriptions filled in Canada use generic medication and some hospitals exclusively use generic drugs. For more information, please visit  http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/med/med-gen-eng.php

About Stiolto

What is Stiolto?

Stiolto is a combination inhaler which contains two active ingredients: tiotropium and olodaterol. Tiotropium is a LAMA (long-acting muscarinic antagonist) and olodaterol is a LABA (long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist). Stiolto is indicated for the long term management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD).

How does Stiolto work?

The two ingredients in Stiolto work to manage COPD in different ways. Tiotropium is a LAMA, which is also known as an anticholinergic. It binds to muscarinic receptors in lungs to help relax the airways. Tiotropium has a long duration of actions (24 hours) and this is thought to be because it takes the chemical a long time to dissociate from the muscarinic receptors. Olodaterol binds and activates beta2-receptors and stimulates the release of adenyl cyclase within cells. This leads to an increase levels of cAMP which relaxes the airways and results in bronchodilation. The onset of olodaterol effects is quick and can last 24 hours.

How do I use Stiolto?

The usual dose of Stiolto is 2 puffs once a day at the same time every day.

If you forget to take a dose, take one as soon as you remember but do not dose more than once per day.

What is the difference between Stiolto vs Spiriva?

Stiolto and Spiriva are both non-steroid inhalers and are both used to help with COPD. Spiriva only contains one ingredient (tiotropium) whereas Stiolto contains both tiotropium and olodaterol. Because of the additional ingredient, and its dual action, Stiolto is more effective than Spiriva.

What is the difference between Stiolto vs Anoro?

Stiolto Respimat and Anoro Ellipta are both combination inhalers that are used to help with COPD. The inhalation device for Anoro is simpler to use, and is commonly preferred as a first-choice treatment, but may cost more than older inhalers depending on your location and insurance. Anoro Ellipta is a Stiolto alternative.

What are the common side effects of Stiolto?

Common side effects of Stiolto include: nasopharyngitis, dehydration, dizziness, insomnia, palpitations, high blood pressure, laryngitis, sinus infection, dry mouth, constipation, GERD, gum disease, dry skin, joint pain, urinary retention or difficulty urinating, UTI, and others.

Can I drink alcohol while using Stiolto?

Drinking alcohol may worsen certain side effects of Stiolto. Over time, alcohol can also increase the risk of infections in COPD patients.

What drugs interact with Stiolto?

Stiolto Respimat should be used with caution with other adrenergic medication due to increased sympathetic effects. Caution should also be used when using Stiolto with steroids, diuretics, or xanthine derivatives which can increase the hypokalemic effect of olodaterol. Concurrent use of beta-blockers are not advisable as it may counter the effects of olodaterol.

Can I buy Stiolto from Canada?

Stiolo is an effective and efficient medication but many Americans can’t afford to either try the medication or to use it regularly, as prescribed, for long term maintenance of their COPD symptoms. Some lucky patients may have samples from their doctor’s office or Stiolto coupons or have access to Stiolto patient assistance programs. For the vast majority of patients who do not have access to these services, ordering Stiolto from Canada is a great way to save on the cost of their prescription.
