Indications

Prolensa is an ophthalmic medication used to treat pain and swelling caused by cataract surgery.

Bromfenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that inhibits prostaglandin formation which plays a large role in your inflammatory response. Thanks to this action, Prolensa can reduce swelling and changes in both retinal thickness and macular volume.

This eye medication is a safe and effective form of treatment for pain and inflammation caused by cataract surgery. Prolensa eye drops are generally well-tolerated and have a low incidence of adverse reactions. The medication also allows for convenient twice-daily dosing without losing efficacy.

Uses and Dosage

The dose of Prolensa that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual being treated. Follow all your doctor’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully to ensure the best results during treatment.

  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after application
  • Begin treatment one day before receiving cataract surgery
  • Continue treatment on the day of surgery and for the following 14 days
  • Tilt your head back and gently pull down your lower lid to create a small pocket
  • Hold the dropper over your eye and install 1 drop into the pocket you created
  • Repeat in the other eye and then close both eyes for 1 to 2 minutes
  • Most adults administer one drop into each affected eye once daily for 14 days after surgery
  • Wait 5 minutes before or after using Prolensa to administer other ophthalmic medications
  • Do not touch the dropper tip or place it onto your eye to avoid contamination
  • Do not use Prolensa eye drops if they are discoloured or if they contain visible particles
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets
  • Do not let the eye drop solution freeze

Cautions

Do not use Prolensa while wearing contact lenses because a preservative can cause them to stain. Wait at least 10 minutes after administering bromfenac to put in your contact lenses.

Avoid driving or performing hazardous activities until you know how this medication will affect you because topical bromfenac may cause your vision to become blurred.

Do not use other eye medication alongside Prolensa unless directed to do so by your doctor.

To ensure your safety when taking Prolensa, tell your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:

  • Asthma or sulfite allergy
  • Diabetes

  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Allergy to aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Bleeding or blood-clotting problem

Do not use Prolensa while pregnant unless your doctor has told you to do so. Using any NSAID within the last 20 weeks of your pregnancy may lead to serious heart or kidney problems in your unborn baby as well as complications.

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding before using Prolensa.
