What is a Generic in Canada? Health Canada (the Canadian regulatory board) evaluates every Canadian generic for their safety, effectiveness, and quality. Every generic used in Canada has the same medical ingredients as their brand name counterpart and is considered bioequivalent to the brand name medication. The quality standards for brand name drugs and generic drugs are the same. All of the ingredients, facilities, and manufacturing processes must meet Canadian federal guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practices. In addition, Canadian generic manufacturers must perform 'comparative bioavailability' studies to demonstrate that their generic products deliver the same amount of medicinal ingredient at the same rate as the brand name medication. Nearly 45% of all prescriptions filled in Canada use generic medication and some hospitals exclusively use generic drugs. For more information, please visit  http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/med/med-gen-eng.php

About Cialis 20 mg

What is Cialis?

Cialis (tadalafil) is a cGMP-Specific Phosphodiesterase (PDE5) Type 5 Inhibitor used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
ED is characterized by a man's inability to achieve an erection or maintain a sufficient hard and erect penis for a gratifying sexual experience. BPH symptoms include a frequent need to urinate, painful urination or a feeling that the bladder has not fully emptied after urination.

How does Cialis work?

Cialis works by allowing the blood vessels in your penis to relax following sexual stimulation, enhancing blood flow into the penile tissues. This results in improved erections for satisfactory penetration and sexual performance.

It is essential to understand that Cialis only works in response to sexual stimulation, which is just as well. The mechanism behind the improved blood flow to the penis is hinted at in the name of the drug class of Cialis, 'PDE 5 inhibitor'. The PDE5 is an enzyme involved in the degradation of cGMP in the corpus cavernosum.

When sexual stimulation occurs nitric oxide (NO) is released in the corpus cavernosum which activates the enzyme guanylyl cyclase which in turns produces and increased level of cGMP. cGMP is responsible for smooth muscle relaxation and blood flow in the penis, creating a stiff erection. When the PDE5 enzyme is inhibited by tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, it decreases the rate at which cGMP is broken down and thus improving and prolonging an erection.

Cialis will not have an effect unless there is a physical arousal upon sexual stimulation.

How do I take Cialis?

Swallow your Cialis tablets whole with water. Cialis can be taken with or without food. T

he dosage of Cialis is dependent on a number of factors but is mainly decided upon by examining the patient (age, weight, other medications being taken, their preference) and the condition being treated (ED or BPH).

There are two different dosage regimens to ED treatment. Firstly, you can use an on-demand dose usually 10 mg to 20 mg, taken as a single tablet at least 30 minutes before intended sexual activity. Alternatively you can take a lower daily dose of between 2.5 mg to 5 mg. It may take up to 5 days for Cialis to reach a sufficient level in your body for sufficient and optimal therapeutic effect. There are pros and cons of taking Cialis daily vs taking Cialis on-demand. Taking Cialis daily means that you can have an increase in spontaneity with your sex life, as no planning is necessary, considering you will have consistent therapeutic levels in your blood plasma. You may also find you tolerate the lower daily dose better, with fewer side-effects than a larger on-demand dose. Some patients may prefer the on demand, single dosing of Cialis, as they may find it delivers better therapeutic results. The idea of only using the drug when needed also appeals to many patients, with a decrease length of time of any tolerable adverse effect. For the on-demand dosing the dose should never exceed 20 mg single dose, maximum ONCE per day. For the daily dose, try to take your dose at or around the same time each day.

If you miss a dose of your daily dose of Cialis, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time to take your next dose, skip your previous dose. Do not double up on a dose to make up for a missed dosed.

Cialis Alternatives: How Cialis compares to Viagra, Levitra and Stendra

Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Staxyn and Stendra all fall under the drug class of PDE5 inhibitors which is indicative of their mechanism of action as these drugs work by inhibiting an enzyme called PDE5. Although each of these medications are indicated in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, their usage may be preferred, one over the other, by looking at how they different in action from each other and how well they are tolerated by the patient.

Below we examine the main differences of the PDE5 inhibitors.

Cialis vs Viagra, Levitra, Staxyn and Stendra

Cialis has a much longer duration of action (up to 36 hours) comparative to Viagra (up to 5 - 6 hours) and Levitra/Staxyn (around 5 - 8 hours). The therapeutic duration here is related to the half-life of the medication. Cialis has a long half-life of around 14 hours whilst the half-life of Viagra is between 2 - 8 hours and Levitra's and Staxyn's half-life is approximately 6 hours.
Although side-effect profiles of Cialis, Levitra, Staxyn and Viagra are similar, a patient may tolerate and prefer one of these medications over the other, so doctors often recommend their patients to try the different types of ED medications available so they can choose the one that works best with little or no side-effects. One side-effect that seems to occur at a higher incident rate in Cialis than in the others, is lower back and limb pain.

Unlike the other PDE5 inhibitors Cialis is approved to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. Although the other PDE5 inhibitor may be helpful in temporarily relieving symptoms of BPH, their short duration of action makes them impractical therapeutic treatment options.

What are the side effects of Cialis?

Below lists the most common side-effects of Cialis, they include but are not limited to:

  • Headache
  • Flushing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramp/upset muscle
  • Lower back pain
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Priapism

If you have a painful erection or prolonged erection that lasts longer than 4 hours seek medical attention. Speak with your doctor if you are concerned about any of these side-effects or if you have any other unexpected effects of Cialis.

Should I take Cialis with or without food?

Cialis can be taken with food or on an empty stomach. Food intake had no effect on the rate of absorption of Cialis.

Is it safe to drink alcohol when taking Cialis?

Alcohol is not contra-indicated with Cialis but alcohol can diminish the effects of Cialis by worsening the symptoms of ED. Drink responsibly when using Cialis for optimal effects.

What other drugs would interact with Cialis?

Cialis has interactions with many medications, some of which could be very serious interactions. It is essential that you inform your doctor and pharmacist of any medications you are currently taking when you are having your Cialis dispensed.

A very important drug interaction to be aware of with Cialis is it's interaction with nitrate medications. Nitrate, Cialis interactions are very serious and can be life-threatening so it is imperative that nitrates are completely avoided when using Cialis. Nitrates come in a variety of formulations from oral tablets, to sublingual, inhalations and patches.

However, there is a potential for harmful degradation products, particularly if the medication has been expired for a long time. Our advice is to stick to using medication within the expiration range and contact your pharmacy if you have any doubts.
