Zyprexa uses

Zyprexa is an antipsychotic drug that is used to treat psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Zyprexa has the active ingredient Olanzapine, which belongs to Zyprexa drug class called atypical antipsychotics.

This medication can be taken short-term to treat manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. It can also be used to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder when given alongside fluoxetine (Prozac). Zyprexa has been shown to reduce hallucinations, agitations, delusions, and pessimism in those suffering from schizophrenia.

Driving or operating heavy equipment when starting treatment with this medication is strongly ill-advised. Zyprexa can slow reaction speeds and cause dizziness or drowsiness. You should not engage in any activity that requires alertness until you understand how this medication affects you, and you are confident in your ability to execute the task safely.

It’s best to avoid drinking alcohol or smoking cannabis while taking this medication, as they can exacerbate the sedating effects of Zyprexa.

Prolonged use of Zyprexa increases the risk of serious side effects developing. Please seek medical care as soon as possible if you experience any of the following symptoms

Here are some of the Zyprexa side effects you may experience.

  • Swelling of arms or legs
  • Confusion
  • Hallucinations
  • Suicidal thoughts or thoughts of self-harm
  • Involuntary muscle movements
  • Difficulty speaking, swallowing, or other impaired motor functions
  • Dehydration — feeling parched, overheating, lack of proper urination, sweating, dry skin
  • High blood sugar — thirstiness, increased urination, increase in appetite, dry mouth, drowsiness, blurry vision, weight loss, strange breath odor.
  • Nervous system reaction — Stiff muscles, high fever, confusion, irregular heartbeat, tremors
  • Liver failure — Dyspepsia, jaundice, dark urine, itching, loss of appetite
  • Allergic reaction — Swelling of the face/throat, rash, hives, trouble breathing
  • While most people do not experience side effects on this drug, some mild effects are more commonly experienced than others. Talk to your doctor about these side effects only if they persist or manifest in a severe manner.
  • Constipation
  • Weight gain
  • Memory loss
  • Tremors
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Personality changes

Always tell your doctor about your medical history when they are prescribing you. If you have or have had a hepatic impairment, seizures, difficulty swallowing, low white blood cell count, dementia, urinary retention issues, narrow-angle glaucoma, chronic constipation or other gastrointestinal problems, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea; Zyprexa may not be safe for you to use, and you should talk to your doctor before starting treatment with it.

This drug can prevent you from sweating properly, making it difficult for your body to regulate temperature. Avoid engaging in activities or putting yourself in situations that can cause overheating wherever possible. This can include exercising, hot tubs, hot showers, and staying in the sun for too long. Heat stroke can occur when the body becomes overheated and cannot cool itself down. Call for emergency medical services if you notice signs of a heat stroke including fever, mood swings, lightheadedness, dizziness, and headaches.

Can Zyprexa be used for anxiety?

Anxiety disorders are among the most commonly occurring mental disorders in the world, and it’s a growing problem that is affecting more people every year.

Antipsychotic medications such as Olanzapine are used off-label by many to treat Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Atypical antipsychotics are a useful alternative option to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), which are commonly used to provide treatment for a range of mood disorders including GAD and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). These drugs, however, are known to cause adverse complications for some, including chronic conditions and suicidal thoughts.

There has been ample evidence over the years that antipsychotics can be used for a number of mood disorders when first-line medications have not worked or are not tolerated. Olanzapine can treat GAD and prevent Panic Attacks associated with anxiety, either in combination with SSRI or SNRI medications or on its own. Ask your doctor about Zyprexa for anxiety if you suffer from an anxiety disorder and are interested in alternative medicine.

Zyprexa Dosage

The dosage for this medication depends on the condition it’s being used to treat.

For schizophrenia, the dosage usually begins with 5 or 10 mg tablets taken once daily, to be increased by 5 mg every week to the target dose of 10 to 20 mg tablets once per day.

For bipolar disorder, the dosage depends on a number of factors. Zyprexa can be used as a short-term or long-term bipolar medication, and the doses will vary respectively. The dose is also reduced when used in combination with another medication such as lithium, fluoxetine, or valproate. Lastly, the amount of medication prescribed to you can vary depending on whether bipolar mania or bipolar depression is the prominent symptom being treated.

You should always closely follow your doctor’s instructions for dosing. Zyprexa can be taken with or without food, depending on personal preference. Tablets are meant to be swallowed whole, without chewing.
