Avapro (Irbesartan) Medication Information

Uses

Avapro is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) indicated for:

  • Treatment of hypertension, to lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions.
  • Treatment of diabetic nephropathy in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes, an elevated serum creatinine, and proteinuria.

Dosage

There are oral tablets available in several different strengths:

  • 75 mg
  • 150 mg
  • 300 mg

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Avapro include:

  • Hyperkalemia
  • Dizziness
  • Orthostatic dizziness
  • Orthostatic hypotension

Speak with your doctor or pharmacist for a full list of side effects that applies to you.

Precautions

Hypotension: Correct volume or salt depletion prior to administration.

Monitor renal function and serum potassium. Changes in renal function including acute renal failure can be caused by drugs that inhibit the renin-angiotensin system. Patients whose renal function may depend in part on the activity of the renin-angiotensin system (e.g., patients with renal artery stenosis, chronic kidney disease, severe heart failure, or volume depletion) may be at particular risk of developing acute renal failure or death on Avapro.

Interactions

Some of the common drug interactions with Avapro:

  • Lithium
  • NSAIDs
  • ACE inhibitors

For a more complete list speak with your doctor or pharmacist

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature (77ºF).

Pharmacist Tips

  • This medication can be titrated as needed
  • Female patients should report pregnancies to their physicians as soon as possible.

Can I use this while breastfeeding?

It is not known whether irbesartan is excreted in human milk, but irbesartan or some metabolite of irbesartan is secreted at low concentration in the milk of lactating rats. Because of the potential for adverse effects on the nursing infant, discontinue nursing or discontinue Avapro.

Can I take this Avapro with other medications for blood pressure?

Avapro may be administered with other antihypertensive agents

What is this medication used for?

This medication is used to treat high blood pressure.

What are the effects of an overdose?
