Usage

Cortone (Cortisone Acetate) is a prescription medication used to reduce inflammation caused by many conditions such as allergic disorders, arthritis, breathing problems, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, breathing problems, certain skin, and eye conditions. The active ingredient in Cortone is Cortisone Acetate. Cortisone Acetate belongs to the class of medication called glucocorticoids (corticosteroids). It works by stopping the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. This also prevents an immune response. It may also be used for other conditions not mentioned in this guide.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Cortone are nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, changes in skin color, skin atrophy, acneiform lesions, raised blood pressure, insomnia, and increased appetite.

Stop using Cortone and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Easy bruising or uncontrolled bleeding;
• Blurred vision, eye pain or redness, seeing halos around lights;
• Mood changes such as depression, mood swings, and agitation;
• Recurrent infection;
• Severe headaches, ringing in your ears, pain behind your eyes;
• Sudden unusual pain in a bone or joint;
• Sudden rise in your blood sugar;
• Unintended weight gain

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking cortisone, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, other corticosteroids (such as prednisone), or any other allergies. Cortone is a tablet that should be taken orally with food or milk to prevent stomach upset. Follow your doctor's directions carefully and use according to your dosage. If you have a history of ulcers, limit alcoholic beverages while taking Cortone to decrease the risk of intestinal bleeding. If you have diabetes, this drug may make it harder to control your blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly and inform your doctor of the results. Avoid close contact with people who just had their flu vaccine. Do not miss your clinic appointment, as regular blood checks will be conducted to monitor your response to treatment. The length of time you take cortisone will depend on your condition and your response to treatment. Don't stop taking cortisone suddenly without talking to your doctor.

Before you start using Cortone, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• A muscle disorder such as myasthenia gravis;
• Bleeding problems or history of blood clots;
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Depression or mental illness;
• Heart diseases such as heart failure;
• Herpes infection of the eyes;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems such as liver cirrhosis or hepatitis infection;
• Tuberculosis

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Steroid medicine such as Cortone may cause harm to the unborn baby. Infants born to mothers who have been using this medication for an extended time may have low levels of corticosteroid hormone. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice symptoms such as nausea or vomiting that doesn't stop, severe diarrhea, or weakness in your newborn. It is unknown if Cortone passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. There may be a drug interaction between Cortone and other drugs such as mifepristone, birth control pills, diabetes medications, estrogen hormone replacement, and aspirin-like medicine. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
