Isoptin SR Uses

Isoptin SR, with the generic name verapamil hydrochloride, is a sustained-release oral medication indicated for the management of essential hypertension. This type of hypertension is characterized by abnormally high blood pressure but is not linked to any other medical conditions. This is also called primary hypertension. By managing high blood pressure, complications like heart attacks, kidney problems, and strokes can be avoided.

This is available in Isoptin SR 240 mg, 180 mg, and 120 mg Prolonged Release tablets.

Isoptin SR Mechanism of Action

This calcium ion influx inhibitor or calcium channel blocker works by decreasing the systemic vascular resistance but often without an orthostatic decrease in blood pressure (BP) or reflex tachycardia. It also works by dilating the main coronary arteries, as well as the coronary arterioles. It also inhibits coronary artery spasm. This results in increased myocardial oxygen delivery. This drug also has the capacity to regularly reduce cardiac afterload or the total systemic resistance against the heart.

How to use Isoptin SR

To begin, read the Isoptin SR guide or information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not use any antihypertensive agent unless you have fully understood the drug information and all instructions written in the guide. If you need more medical advice or have queries regarding verapamil, you should ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this film-coated tablet orally. This is usually prescribed every 12 hours or once daily, in the morning. Take this medication with a meal or as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablets whole and drink a glass of water right after. Chewing, crushing, or cutting this medication is not recommended because doing so can release the active ingredients at once and increase the risk of side effects.

Don’t forget to follow the directions on the prescription exactly. Set up a dosing schedule so you will not miss a dose. If you miss your dose, take the tablet immediately unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Further, do not alter your Isoptin SR dosage as it is based on your overall health condition and response to therapy. Do not stop taking this oral drug abruptly or even for a few days to avoid rebound effects or worsening conditions.

Precautions when taking Isoptin SR

Before you begin to take this medication, you should fully disclose your medical history, including any history of heart failure, heart rhythm problems, myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy, kidney disease, and liver disease. Certain conditions may directly impact how your system will respond to the therapy. In addition, you should talk about all prescription medications, nonprescription medications, herbal products, and supplements you are using because of possible drug interactions.

Continually lookout for an allergic reaction while on this medication. Avoid taking this oral prescription if you have a known allergy to verapamil or any inactive ingredients each sustained-release tablet may contain. Signs of severe allergic reaction are itching/hives, swelling of the extremities, persistent dizziness, skin rashes, and trouble breathing. If this occurs, discontinue medication and seek emergency medical attention.

Among the adverse effects of this prescription drug are dizziness and lightheadedness. These may be triggered or aggravated by alcohol consumption. Limit or avoid drinking alcoholic beverages while on verapamil. You should also practice extreme caution when doing activities that require alertness, including operating machinery and driving.

There are still no definitive clinical trials to show whether this medication could cause harm to unborn babies. For breastfeeding moms, this drug may pass into breast milk but is unlikely to cause danger to nursing infants.
