Indications

Diabeta appears to be a brand name for the diabetes medication glyburide, which is used to treat type 2 diabetes by lowering blood glucose levels.

Glyburide belongs to the class of drugs called sulfonylureas.

Use and Dosage

Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start taking glyburide each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Glyburide comes in several types of tablets which provide different amounts of the medication. Do not switch between different forms or brands of this medication unless directed by your doctor.

Take this medication by mouth with breakfast or the first main meal of the day as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. Some patients, especially those taking higher doses, may be directed to take this drug twice a day. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

If you are already taking a diabetes drug (such as chlorpropamide), follow your doctor’s directions carefully for stopping the old drug and starting glyburide.

If you are also taking colesevelam, take glyburide at least 4 hours before colesevelam.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time(s) each day.

Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens (your blood sugar is too high or too low).

Cautions

Before you begin to take this oral antidiabetic, you should disclose your entire medical history to your physician. This includes any history of thyroid disease, hormonal conditions, liver disease, kidney disease, hyponatremia, or autonomic neuropathy. Certain diseases or conditions may affect how your body will respond to this type of medication. Also, you should talk about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking because of the possible drug interactions with this sulfonylurea.

Continually lookout for an allergic reaction while on this Diabeta medication. Do not take this prescription drug if you have a known allergy to glyburide or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. You should discontinue the medication and immediately alert your local emergency line once you experience signs of hypersensitivity, such as breathing trouble, severe dizziness, swelling of the face and neck, skin rashes, and hives.

Alcohol and glyburide may interact and cause a disulfiram-like reaction characterized by dizziness, facial flushing, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Alcohol consumption could also worsen adverse effects like dizziness. With this, you should avoid or limit alcohol consumption while taking this drug.

This oral medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. You should limit your sun exposure and avoid indoor tanning. You must also apply sunblock cream and wear protective clothing when going outdoors.

Pregnancy can worsen or cause diabetes. If you are pregnant, you should consult your healthcare provider right away, as this condition may warrant an increase in dosage or changes in your treatment plan.
