Usage

Proglycem (Diazoxide) is a prescription medication used to treat severe hypoglycemia (very low blood sugar) due to excessive insulin release because of cancer of the pancreas and other chronic conditions that can cause the release of too much insulin. Insulin is a natural substance that lowers blood sugar. The active ingredient in Proglycem is Diazoxide. Diazoxide belongs to the class of medication called Glucose elevating agent, thiazide (with no diuretic effects). It prevents insulin release from the pancreas, returning blood sugar to normal. It is essential to know that Diazoxide should not be used to treat low blood sugar from poor nutrition or diet (functional hypoglycemia).

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Proglycem are abdominal pain, constipation, palpitation, tachycardia, dizziness, anorexia, nausea, and vomiting.

Stop using Proglycem and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Signs of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) such as an urge to urinate, feeling thirsty, fruity breath odour, and feeling dizzy;
• Symptoms suggestive of a serious allergic reaction such as rash, itching, and swelling of a different body part;
• Syncopal attack or sudden loss of consciousness;
• Unintended weight loss;
• Worsening of blood sugar

Warnings and Interactions

Before you use Proglycem, you should inform your doctor if you are allergic to it, other thiazides such as hydrochlorothiazide, or any other allergies. Proglycem comes as a capsule and should be taken with a cup of water according to your prescription label. Your doctor may direct you to take a special diet for your condition. Proglycem comes in various forms, either as a capsule or suspension. You should not switch between Proglycem capsule and suspension forms without talking with your doctor first. You must check your blood sugar and urine for sugar and ketones regularly as directed and report the result to your doctor. Your doctor may adjust your dose based on these tests. Follow your doctor's directions carefully. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. Tell your doctor if your condition lasts or gets worse.
