Androcour or Cyproterone, is used to treat prostate cancer. As an anti-androgen medication, it blocks androgen , including testosterone which can promote growth of cancer cells in certain types of prostate cancer.

What is Androcur used for?
Androcur or Cyproterone is a treatment for advanced prostate cancer. It blocks the effect of testosterone in the body by reducing the amount of it that is produced in the body. This denies the cancer cells what they need to multiply.
A prescription-only medicine, cyproterone is in a category of drugs called steroidal antiandrogens. Besides prescribing Androcur for prostate cancer treatment, doctors can recommend it for other conditions , but this medication should not be taken by anyone who has not been evaluated by a doctor.
How is this medicine taken?
Cyproterone can be taken orally and in the form of a long-acting injection. No matter how you decide to take it, the important thing is to use the right dosage. If you decide to take in the tablet form, then you need 200mg to 300mg per day. This amount is equivalent to four to six tablets, and should be taken after eating your meal.
If you have no testicles or have undergone a procedure called orchiectomy, then you should take a lower dose of Cyproterone: 100mg to 200mg every day. Take this as a divided dosage all through the day. If you opt for a long-acting injection or Androcur Depot, then the doctor will deposit 300mg into the muscle one time a week.
Only refer to your doctor to alter your dose, and if you want to discontinue use, or alter your dosage, you should speak to your doctor first. It is normal to feel very tired when you begin taking this medicine, but after some time has passed, your system will adjust itself to the medicine and you will feel better.
What are the Side Effects of Cyproterone?
The most prevalent side effects include the following:
- Impotence, low libido
- Hair loss
- Unsteadiness or lack of balance when walking
- Increased bowel movements or loose stools
- Lack of energy
- Skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight
- Skin staining, irritation
- Breast pain or swelling
- Weird hair growth
- Weight gain

Precautions
If your doctor wants you to start taking Androcur, make sure you are not allergic to the potent ingredient in it, cyproterone. Additionally, tell your doctor about:
- Liver diseases like cirrhosis, tumor, jaundice and so on
- Dubin-Johnson syndrome,also called bilirubin metabolism disorder
- Sickle-cell anemia
- Diabetes
- Depression
- Other medicines you are taking, including testosterone and androgens
- Supplements and herbal drugs you may be taking
- Kidney disease
